Errrr... what are you doing here then?

I dropped a couple waist sizes in the first 6 months but I think my body has a size it wants to be and adjusts my metabolism to match my increased activity. So I dropped two and went up one. 34 -> 30 -> 32.

At 38 years old, I always content if your waist size is lower than your age, you're considered "fit" in North America.

I lost 22.5 kgs in 7 months just by dieting alone, and I'm still going.

I think you definitely need to get your motivation straight from the beginning and keep it in mind when you are about the reach for the phone to call pizza. My motivation was being unhappy at having people hassle/tease me about my weight all the time, and never getting any interest from women.

I never found the motivation in Thailand, but 'thanks' to Korea for helping me to get off my lazy backside and become an 'acceptable' human being again!

Why should not liking one country's cuisine prevent one from traveling, living, and enjoying other aspects of the nation?

If I set out to only go to countries where I like the food, then I guess I would save a fortune on flights and other travel costs...

I'm a picky eater, but I'm also not some uncultured, wimpy baby who refuses to set foot in a country that eats waht I don't like. And what do you think I'm going to do -- arrive here on a contract, after a few days announce to my boss that I'm going home because I hate the food? Question

All I meant by that is that hating the locale fare means it's more difficult to just pop into a restaurant for lunch, or to pick-up some take-out on the way home from work. If I want to eat, I've gotta have the energy, the time, and the groceries in the kitchen to cook for myself. Or else I don't eat. My first year here, I had no energy, little time, and not a lot of food options.....so I lost a lot of weight. That's all.

(As an aside, I hate Thai food too...which most people find strange. I just can't eat ANYTHING spicy. Not BBQ sauce. Not black pepper. Not garlic - unless it's Italian style. So that's basically all of Asia where I can say for certain that I hate most of the food).

It's time for me to make yet another new hole in my belt, and I've only been here 6 weeks.

That happened to me, too. I'd been living in Asia before coming here, no change in weight after a few years. Get to Korea and I'm (as my dad said) 'dropping pounds you don't look as though you can afford to lose' Mad

I was already on the "tightest" hole of the belts that I brought with me when I first got to Korea. But rather than boring new holes in them, I opened the clasp and sliced off a length of leather. Otherwise, you get that creased worn-down groove in the belt showing.

Because a food is core culture. It ripples out from there.

Lost?

I'm trying to gain weight and it's hard as hell for me (it's a problem a lot of people would love to have, I know). I've added about eight kilos since coming to Korea, mostly through increased food intake and gym time. None of that weight is fat, though.

Korean food, on the whole, does not promote weight gain. I have to eat different carbs - i.e. pasta, bread, potatoes - because rice certainly doesn't put on the kilos and I don't really want the weight or, um, 'benefits' of samgyapsal.

What kinds of Korean food can you eat to help lose weight? See, I hate fish so I stay away from ALL fish foods, which is too bad because it's the healthiest. I would think rice and kimchi but rice has tons of carbs. To those of you who have lost weight, what did you munch on?

Do you exercise? That'd be a necessary first step. Try to exercise first thing in the morning before you've eaten much (maybe a banana or something for the energy, but no big breakfast yet). Make sure you're keeping your heart rate at a high - though workable - level if you want to burn fat. After you've finished your workout, eat the larger meal of your day. Your body will be craving nutrition and will burn damn near everything you take in. Ultimately, regular exercise will have to become part of your lifestyle if you want to keep fat off, so find something you enjoy doing and stick to it. Discipline is key.

As for diet, remember that "eating green" after about six o'clock PM can help a lot. Stick to things like lettuce and cucumbers in the evening - they require more energy for your body to burn than they give you, so they'll help take the weight off. Foods like apples and carrots, while healthy, will actually spike your insulin levels and promote fat retention, so avoid them right before bed and eat them at other times of the day.

For meat, try lean chicken breast (not fried). Get your carbs earlier in the day so your body will have time to burn them before you go to sleep, at which point your metabolism grinds to a virtual halt. If you eat your rice - probably the least likely of the complex carbs to put on the weight - in the morning after you've exercised your body should burn most of it quickly. Your body needs some carbs, so don't totally cut them out, just work them into an all-around healthy lifestyle.

And obviously: If you drink, cut out the alcohol. It's packed with sugar and makes you lethargic. And don't smoke. But I'm sure you this already.

Some Korean foods that might help you: momil guksu () is considered a diet food in Korea and tastes good; Gimchi chigae with tuna is probably pretty good. You can't go wrong with fresh vegetables and lean meat, though it's too bad you don't like fish.

Good luck.
