Male Lawmakers Call for Scrapping of Family Registration System
A group of 152 male lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties Monday called for the abolition of the male-dominated family registration system, or "hoju-je," within this year, increasing the possibility of the passage of a revised civil code of the system by the National Assembly.
"It's shameful that the out-of-date and unreasonable family registry system has survived until the 17th National Assembly," Rep. Lee Kye-ahn of the ruling Uri Party said at a news conference at the Assembly in Yoido, Seoul. "We will push for the repeal of the system within this year, not only to protect the rights of women and the underprivileged, but also to make a real democratic society where men and women are treated equally."

Terminology: Hoju
Hoju means 'head of the family,' and in Korea, the Hoju system is the system used to file the personal records of all Korean citizens. One person is named the hoju, and the rest of the family are registered under the hoju. So all the citizens' records are kept in family units, not individual files. However, the Hoju system goes far beyond the function of certifying a citizen's identity. It is a gender discriminatory practice that acknowledges only paternal lineage by giving the man of the family first priority when naming the hoju.
For example, if the hoju dies, the family must report the transfer of the hoju title within one month, and there is a hierarchy involved. The first in line is a male descendent of the former hoju (his son, grandson, great grandson... all of whom are considered family regardless of marriage), followed by an unmarried female descendent (daughters are not considered family once they marry), the wife, the mother, and then the daughter-in-law.

It's unbelievable if you ask me. Women are greedy and will ask fo as many rights/priviledges as they can. I can't believe they're complaining: they don't even go to the army for chrissakes. If it was up to me they wouldn't even be voting. |

The hoju system is a travesty. It makes women into slaves with very limited rights. I really would love to see it abolished asap. |

thats what i say to chauvinist idiots like you. As for the hooker thing, that was inspired by your questions regarding hookers and getting caught with one. now go away. And I know you arent Korean, you pretty much admit to that. |

"The ones that support this system are momma boy sissies who cant relate to a woman on an equal playing field."
If the field is equal, why don't Korean women go to the army?
Millions of Korean men (and women), many among the most intelligent, support the sytem and have supported it for centuries. The truth is that you're a pussified 'man', unable to take on responsibilities, and without any leadership. You're the sissy. |

Until I saw the other posts, I thought you were being sarcastic. From what I've seen, I'm only assuming that you're Korean. Why do you think women shouldn't have the same rights as men? Why do you keep bringing up the military? Is that your only complaint? Are you bitter that women don't have to join the military, and you do? Are you a closet homosexual, and you're just overcompensating with all the posts about hookers and your anti-women attitude? Or do you just hate women, period? |

If you want equality, equality should apply to all fields. Earning a right has always meant gaining a new responsibility, just like in ancient greece where women couldn't vote as a trade off for not going to war. To me it's just fair, you can't have it both ways.
the Hoju system, in my opinion, (and in many Koreans' opinion, you guys just refuse to admit it), is traditional morality and has served women for centuries. You're rewriting history by portraying Korean men as oppressors. The system meant that men were responsible for defending and providing for their women.
Btw daechidong elementary school teacher, asking about prostitution doesn't make me a customer anymore than asking about the hoju system makes you a Korean woman. Got it sissy? |

I say closet homosexual. All that anger.
The Hoju system is for cavemen oppressor idiots who couldnt get a date unless mommy and daddy arranged one for them.
As for the military, what a freaking joke. Korea isnt thr only country with military service but it is the only country with a system for oppressing women right out of the freaking dark ages. No wonder Korean women cheat on these mommas boys, they know how pathetic they are. |

It served them by making them property of men and denying them basic and fundamental rights.
Its funny what this guy's definition of a non-sissy is. A caveman soju drinker who beats his wife, does nothing at home and expects to be waited on hand and foot. Its their right, afterall they went to the army! OH MY! |

Considering that the system was introduced by the Japanese, it's only been around for the better part of a century.
Whose sock is "Sonja" anyway? |
