My friend, a female teacher, shared a cute story with me Saturday. Her middle schoolers were doing a test. A girl got up and asked my friend if she could go to the washroom. My friend said "no." The girl looked a bit panicked.
"But teacher it's magic time," she whispered. Her eyes were pleading for so much woman-to-woman understanding.
My friend asked out loud, for everyone to hear. "WHAT IS MAGIC TIME?"
The class went wild.
Turns out magic time is the Korean euphemism for having your period. Herb.
Oh dear. How embarrassing for the poor girl. |

| I think I would've gotten that. Right, magic time. Wink wink. Was your friend just making sure, or did she really have no idea? |

Holy crap! I thought that was just some codephrase my gf made up! I did "get it" the first time she alluded to it, though...
This might be a bit sick, but has anyone heard of the "ddeokboki" euphemism? |

Share with the rest of us the "ddeok bokki" euphemism. I think I get it (am having visions of OB, and no, not the lager) but just to be sure.... |

Your ob guess is correct, Katydid. I've heard Koreans refer to getting down at that time of the month as "ddeokbokki seksuh."
An unmistakable visual reference. |

The reference or the act?
I for one have no problem with either: the image is bang-on for clarity, and the act is not that different from any other time, except that--in my experience--the woman tends to be hotter (literally and attitudinally). |

Yeah she had no idea. I think "magic time" comes from an old Korean tradition that a woman had certain magical powers during menstruation. |

Um...no. Ewww cause I am thinking quite literally.
Funny metaphor though.
I've only been with one guy who wasn't phased by the idea of having sex during a woman's period. Everyone else was pretty grossed out. |

| Come on! This is a no brainer... if I have a teenaged girl that looks pretty desperate to go to the bathroom, I let her go imediately. Maybe the realisation that this is a consideration of teaching this age group comes with experience but you would think that a woman may have figured it out regardless of experience. |

Always let kids go to the bathroom!!! But only one at a time and only once per class.
If you don't you risk a puddle on the floor or a smell which will really ruin your classroom ambience. |

Actually, the "magic time" thing originated from a popular commercial for pads a couple years ago which said that "every month, women live in a magic time". Lot's of people started using the "magic time" reference thereafter. It's funny that someone would think this expression was a traditional idea when it was really for "Magics" pads! |

Just my two cents...I heard (from Korean girls) that the sauce in ddeok bokki is what is being compared to a woman's period.
