| There's some dandy hiking in those parts. Chiak Mountain, Sobaek Mountain, Worak Mt and more are all close. By Korean standards the air's pretty good. It's not too far from Seoul either - maybe 2-3 hours by bus. |

It takes 2-3 hours by bus to get to Seoul if there's a traffic jam. It usually takes no more than 1h30. Wonju has fairly clean air. It has the mildest weather in the region during winter. Lots of nice fishing spots. It's also not too far from Danyang, if you're into rafting. |

Yeah, I was accounting for traffic because...well, this is Korea and there seems always to be traffic.
Danyang's a really nice little town and an excellent gateway to Sobaeksan.
Also close is Songnisan, one of my favorite hikes in South Korea.
Sorry, I don't know much about the cultural atmosphere of Wonju, but based on my experience, Korean towns don't vary a lot from one to the next. |

| Well, there are lots of excellent restaurants in Wonju. There's even one particular restaurant that is well-known all over Korea. I've even seen a restaurant in Itaewon that claimed to have the same recipe. There are also a few interesting festivals, my favorites being the Hanji festival and the Wonju Internatioal Tattoo (military marching bands). (Feel free to ask any questions about Wonju. I've lived there for a couple of years and return every couple of weeks or so because my wife is from the area). |

i liked it. good skiing/snowboarding nearby as well, with shuttles running directly to the slopes. 2 hrs to seoul by train--i get car sick.
supposed to be good rock-climbing as well.
the duck restaurant, though out of town, is fabulous. there's a lovely trout sashimi restaurant near the downtown--if it still has the same owners, she speaks decent english and is very sweet. |
