Too far.

Violence begets violence.
Putting him outside was shame enough.
Keep him afterwards while everyone else leaves would also have an affect.
But what you did only works if you are seen as a legit authority figure in his eyes, rather than another tyrannical foreigner.
Your classroom ain't in Kansas. Seriously. It makes a difference.
Corporal punishment from expat teachers just isn't a good idea, for many reasons.
Stop doing it. |

| Students often tell me to *beep* myself and give me the finger punch me etc... A couple of times I threw them out of class and into the wall on the other side of the hall. One time I slapped one with a book. They deserve it, but keep in mind the parents are not so sympathetic to your struggle. |

perhaps if you phrased it that way to him he might understand.

I used that argument with the chiefs on several occasions during my hogwon career. Mixed results. It depended on whether the chiefs were taking a long or a short view of things. From what I can tell, the typical Korean owner inclines towards the latter, to the detriment of the school, the students' learning, and their teachers' sanity.
Obviously the boy didn't want to be in the class (maybe if I was in his shoes, I wouldn't want to be in a hogwon English class either) and perhaps saw the "if you act up I kick you out" thing as an incentive rather than a threat. Just a thought.

It all lives and dies on this, as well as your classroom management skills. |
