Regulations Tightened to Curb Commercial Sperm and Egg Sales
People who attempt to sell their sperm or embryonic eggs in 2005 will face a maximum of three years in prison, while those who encourage or broker such transactions will be subject to up to two years' incarceration or fined a maximum of W30 million. Regulations on gene tests by biotech firms will also be strengthened to prevent indiscriminate tests.
Stem cell research on human embryos will be permitted provided it is aimed at discovering cures for 18 rare diseases such as leukemia, strokes, Alzheimer's and diabetes. More diseases are expected to be added to the list after further deliberation by the National Bioethics Deliberation Committee.
