DVD Ripping Tools

I use DVD Decrypter which is free. It has ripped everything for me without a hitch since I bought my LG dual layer burners in November of last year.

DVD Burning Tools

I use DVD Fab which I didn't see on the site anymore. It lets me burn the movie only while eliminating subtitles I don't need and keeping the English subtiles for foreign languages inherent to the movie. It also renders the movie region free. DVD Shrink lets you compress the movie to one disk. DVD Fab does not do that.

Dual layer disks were on sale in Yongsan for just under 20,000 each won last month. They'll be cheaper next year according to Yongsan and Toronto, Canada dealers. They are $18.00 each in Canada now.

Both links are part of the site Videohelp.com. It seems to me unlikely that you'd need any other site for help with all matters related to ripping, burning, authoring or related hardware.

This link has Clone DVD 3.0 and other elegantly cracked software. I tried Clone DVD but it cannot read some inherent subtitles as in it just says 'Undefined' rather than the language. Maybe that's not a problem.

I have an LG DVD burner and an LG dual layer burner. I use Imation DVD-R disks to burn onto. No problems with those disks yet. P4 2800C with hyperthreading, 1gb ram and an ATI 256 mb video card.

Not 100% sure, but I think I saw D/L DVD's in Osaka (over Choesok) for 1000 yen each... might be of help for you if any friends are doing a visa run. We seem to take a shafting on DVD media here in Korea. Picked up 2 spindles of 50 dvd+ 8x media for $38 cdn on my trip home in the fall.

Personally, I opted for a (relatively... 12x) fast single layer in the hopes that by the time the D/L media prices come down, a new technology, like blue laser, will be available.

I'm in the US at the moment.

DL DVDs are about $5 each.

Single-layer can be had for 50 cents each if you buy a bulk of 50 Memorex at Wal-Mart.

I have an LG Super Mult DVD Superwriter (12X speed):

I bought two-one for each PC I built.

Is this irony? Now that I'm back in Canada I'm much less likely to copy anything. I can see all the movies in the theater and then watch them on pay TV. At that point I have the movie memorized and can wait for them to come on sale after they've been rented for a couple weeks. I can buy the old movies I want for a s little as 2 for $9.00.

In Korea copying movies was important because TV was so bad and creating my own de facto movie channel via copied movies helped me save money, stay on top of English and retain a semblance of sanity myculturewise. Copying software was important too because one can't find English versions with English manuals. Window Washer is about $54 here (retail price at Radio Shack and that's toooooooo Laughing

) but not available at all in Korea in English. Yet it's so vital to keeping a clean PC and preventing the spread of malware.

Anyway I'm happy just the same because I don't think I'd have spent the time or money to build a couple P4 PC's if I'd been in Canada. Yongsan has no equal here.

Well, I was going to buy a DL DVD burner while here in the USA on vacation, but decided not to. I can get one for between 50,000 and 140,000 won, but they seem to have a lot of issues burning the new media correctly -- even top names like SONY. The DL disks can make some pretty expensive coasters! Also, the older players have more difficulty with these than single-layer discs.

I'm waiting.

I finally got my DVD burner. I ended up getting an LG Super Multi DVD Writer GSA-4163B (dual-layer) at space nine for only 70,000 won. I also picked up a stack of 10 DVD -R for 5,000 won (single layer discs).

Using DVD Shrink as per Derreks suggestion I burned a movie I had on my hard drive and it works perfectly.

The DVD laser on my Samsung (I forget the model) burnt out after 3 months. Free "after service" but it's still annoying.

If you play around with DVD shink, you'll figure out you can set it up to read off of your DVD Player drive, do the compression to a HD folder, then automatically open up NERO and burn the DVD onto a blank in your new burner drive. It's nice to just set it up and let it go.

BTW, with some of the newer discs (not many) I have to use DVD Decrypter first, then DVD Shrink to burn, as DVD Shrink hasn't been updated for a year (and won't be, since the author of it went to work for Nero).

Was amazed to see burners for as low as 40,000 won (OEM versions) in boxes at Youngsan. No software.

Was tempted to buy one, because the single-layer burn was 16x, and DL was maybe 4 or 8? Can't remember... was just shuffling by quickly.

The next project is to edit the 90 minutes of video from my vacation down to about 40-45 minutes and then add 100 or so pictures as a slide show and burn the whole project as a DVD with 2-3 chapters...
