Where can a friend get a legitimate Windows Xp and or Office, or at least Word, in English for a cheapish price?
He was nabbed a while back with pirate versions and doesn't dare go there again.
Second hand would be fine, as long as it's legit. |

Who nabbed? Where? How? Why?
He can try something like this:
http://www.openoffice.org/ |

Who actually buys software? There is so much free stuff out there why spend money on software? I spend all my 'computer money' on hardware. The only stuff I ever buy is games as a lot of them are fun to play online and you can't play if you dont pay.
Just use the free stuff or the bundled software with your hardware. And avoid paying for any microsoft stuff at all costs. |

Who pays for software? People who appreciate all of the time and effort involved in writing a good piece of software (I am not talking about movies or music), then those same people have to pay more because of all the freeloaders who think like you.
The "Free stuff" is just stolen and you are a felon for possessing it. You have no right to it without paying...it's only "free" because you are a thief.
I'm sure if you earned your living by writing software, you would have a different opinion. |

That's true, but if people only used software the price would quickly rack up way beyond the computer's price. Hell, I think MS Office 2003 alone goes for 500 bucks or so. Photoshop CS is the same, again. Tack on a copy of XP and that's beyond the price of the computer. Companies can afford to pay but I don't know too many individuals who can shell out that kind of money every two years or so. |

And so you speak of professional software solutions. These specialty products will always be more. There are many good photo editors out there, and many good office alternatives that are cheaper and still offer more than the average person needs. From Maseratis to Ladas....a product for evey budget.
No one who isn't a professional digital photographer (or a hardcore enthusiast) needs the wealth of Photoshop. No one needs the full office suite, outside of a large-scale business. No....there is so much crap in Office these days. Maybe 3m uses the whole deal, but not for home users. If people want it, it's there, and the price is set. Just because the price is high, doesn't mean one can steal it. There would be a lot more Ferrari owners.....or rather "possessors"....
You only upgrade software if you have outgrown the current version. Everytime a new fashion comes in, do you burn your pants and buy new? Why people think this way about software, I'll never know.
Anyone who really needs a top-notch program like Photoshop can afford it. Besides, you shell out big time once, and get deals from Adobe after that. OpenOffice is a good deal.....free.
So, you mean that if everyone paid for their software, the price would go up? Sorry....don't follow that at all. Perhaps I am misinterpreting your first statement. |

I'm on Photoshop all the time doing things and I use all of the major Office applications (often in conjunction with Photoshop which is a little annoying because Adobe and Microsoft programs don't like each other much). What I do I Photoshop (and I don't usually work with photos) can't be easily done with other programs.
For people who are always using the computer the newest version is great because you don't have to swear about the things that you swear about on the version you presently own.
When it comes down to it, you're right. If I was rich, or even very well off, I would shell out the money every time. And if everybody did that the price would maybe come down and everybody would be happier but we're kind of stuck in a vicious cycle now where people can't afford too much software so they get copies and companies charge more because they aren't selling enough. I say the companies should break the cycle first. |

Perhaps not as easy, but by your own words, it can be done. You will always pay for convenience. The same answer can be applied to your next paragraph as well.
Don't get me wrong...I am not rich and wish I could afford all of the latest and greatest. It does however, stand to reason that for the reasons I don't drive a new Porsche, I don't have the latest Photoshop. They are both the high-end of the spectrum, somewhere I don't frequent.
Are the prices high? Yes. Too high? Depends on your money and how bad you want it. Should the company lower the cost? I have mixed feelings here. Good things cost more. They always have and always will. Why bother fighting it....it's the way of the world. Worry about the things you can control. Look for cheaper alternatives....they are out there. Perhaps not with all of the functionality, but hey....they are cheap.
One question, purely for interest, not to pull teeth:
Why should the companies of high-end software lower the cost? Should Lightwave, Maya, Photoshop, AutoCAD be cheap? They are all professional products. |

He was reported to the relevant authorities by somebody who was angry with him, ironically the same person who had given him much of the software.
So be nice to whoever suplies your software needs, you never know.
And I will tell him to give Openoffice a try, it looks like it should do the trick.
Thanks |

Microsoft has its hands full pursuing companies that use unlicensed software. Do you seriously believe they have the time or inclination to bother with hagwon teachers? Give me a break. |

And do remember that freeware and shareware are often riddled with spyware and trojans. Also are you willing to trust a person and run their keygenerator/ nocd crack to crack the latest game of such and such? They have no problem cracking the game, I'm sure they have no problem (technically or ethically) hacking your system.
Be careful, things that purport to be 'free' often aren't. |
