| i live with my partner in a pretty big flat in the itaewon area. it has two big closed rooms, one common dining room/kitchen and a bathroom. i don't know how many pyong that is, but we put down 1 mil key money and pay 700 for rent. we used an agent so we paid him 300 (i think). it's nice. |

how can you afford the high rents?
Would it be possible to take out a loan and get place higher key money but less monthly fee. In the long run that would make more economic sense. |

Not sure who you're referring to when you say 'high rents'. Paperbag & her partner are paying a total of 700,000 won/month for a 2-bedroom unit in a sought-after location in central Seoul. To me that's really low, especially with only 1 million won deposit. I was paying 15 million key and 800,000 won for a place in that general area nearly 10 years ago.
Across the river and 15 minutes away from Paperbag, in Shinsa-dong, Kangnam-gu, lives a friend of mine who's paying 800,000 won (no deposit) for an irregular-shaped, scrunched-up 12-pyong hole with oppressive street noise & music blaring from the hostess bars.
If all this seems too high, one could go the goshiwon route (many other threads discuss the pros & cons). Again, what high rents are you referring to, Ulsanchris?
As for taking out a loan.... as a foreigner? With no property in Korea to use as collateral? Well, I know there's a first time for everything, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. |

Most people renting their own place get a housing allowance (maybe 400,000) from their work and/or share with friend or partner. |
