Just a friendly enquiry, don't anyone get their panties in a bunch as often happens here. Why do those of you who render place names and the like in Hanguel in your posts do so? Is it due to the difficulty of translation into roman script, or do you like to display your prowess at the language? I'm just curious, after all, I know its a board about things Korean, but the default language is english here. Again, its not a criticism, and yes, I can read it (but not speak it), but I just want to know your various reasons for doing this.
Cheers

Because I have a *beep* of time trying to figure out how something is supposed to be written in English. A few, like Sinchon, are common so when I spell it it's just to be consistent with the other words I write. |

I don't generally use the hangeul for place names, as it takes just as much time to switch with the little key there and type it out as it does to type the name in Englishee letters. Plus, most of us are pretty familiar with the spellings of place names, and they're mostly only 2-3 syllables long...
Now I WILL use the 'geul to type out a lot of other stuff, cuz that's when romanization gets messy and dumb-looking. It's hardly to show off any prowess, I'd doubt, cuz a person can learn hangeul quicker than they can learn to drink from a straw. |

Me too, I never got to learn Korean through romanization so anything I write is an approximation. I assume that people won't mind the odd place name here and there, and a few words that just can't be rendered into English.
Like some Korean girl on the phone saying ;~~~~~ or something like that. As long as I don't write out sentence after sentence of Korean I assume most people don't mind, and even appreciate seeing the odd word here and there if they are studying. |

Fair enough, I just wondered why. I also thought it makes it harder for newbies to understand posts, but then again it may give them larger incentive to learn the script. I know I did pretty quick smart.

I do it because I despise the romanization. It avoids potential confusion as well.
I've actually become quite used to reading and writing in Korean, simply because of the fact that my current and previous schools both had everyone's names in Korean. |

I think its a nice new development on the board. 75%(?) appreciate the clarification (romanization sucks) & yes, added incentive for the rest to learn at least the basics. |

Romanization does suck, but it does give us "Busan", "Seoul", "Itaewon", and "Bundang". All these are romanized.
Reading a sentence in romanized Korean is just plain annoying, though. |

Just my penny's worth but...
My Korean is terrible but I can read and survive without having to shout English at everyone, which gets you nowhere btw. Place names and such I'd much rather see written in Korean than English as it is often easier. As has been noted by other posters romanisation sucks, but can make it easier at times. I can read a big book in English in a few days if I'm interested a small book in Korean would take me months even if it was a kiddies book.
My main problem with reading Korean is not being fast enough, though I'm, getting better. It is easy to learn but to be quick in it is a different matter.
It is worth learning to read and write in Korean even if you're only here for a short time, it makes life a lot easier and a lot less frustrating. It's pretty easy so just do it for your sanity. Rather than have a long potentially costly mistake with a taxi driver get a map and or go online and write down the nearest place to where you want to go and give it to the taxi driver. Sometimes they take the piss but often they will help you out.
When I go somewhere I haven't been before I'll write it down just because many Koreans are freaked ny a weygookin trying to talk in Korean.
Have fun |

If so many of us realise how inadequately romanised a lot of Korean words can be, why don't the Koreans understand how badly English sounds when Hangeulised?
Anyway, this should make the point to those questioning the use of Hangeul on here. Romanised Korean often sounds as bad to Koreans as Konglish does to us. |

Because well-meaning Korean English teachers "Hangeulise" English words to teach kids how to say them...*sigh* and then well meaning foreigners learning also do the same thing... |
