anyone using the desktop search from www.copernic.com ?
it is fantastic. Beats Google's by a long way.
It searches Firefox cache and favourites (the only desktop search to do so) and, for gmail users, enabling POP obviously enables searching your email for you too.
It has a great preview feature and, because of the way it enables you to refine searches and sort results, very easy to find what you want.
Highly recommended... |

Hmm....I don't really understand the need for this product. Yes, it has some features that may come in handy, but it doesn't seem like it's doing anything that other programs aren't.
Maybe if I had more friends I would need to search my e-mails. |

Call me paranoid, but the idea of inviting a 3rd party to search and index the contents of my hard drive makes me nervous. You never know when that might come back to haunt you.
Having said that, I've spent a fair amount of time evaluating Copernic's search appliance for a client of mine. It was as good as Google at a fraction of the price - those guys are on to something. |

Heck it's invaluable for us. We've got email and files going back 10 years on our pc. In addition, my wife can't find a needle in a haystack on it due to deep insecurities about technology. To search email, she has to use Outlook, to search pics she has to use Windows Explorer, to search for a file, she has to use XP's search thingy. Windows search isn't exactly user friendly but she can find anything with Copernic.
As for security, using a good firewall, you can block it, as I did, from accessing the net. No reason it should as far as I can see...
I can see why others wouldn't use it from what you're saying, however it is extremely handy to have the ability to search for a host of formats through one GUI and sort via these formats. It is also way quicker for searching within files than the XP search engine.
Anyway... to each his own... |
