I think it's pretty obvious when someone's being pretentious or not.
Not pretentious: "I'm thinking of going down to Ƽ to hang out this weekend...blah blah blah"
Pretentious: "The problem with you is that you're always a ٶ even though you have a ģ. I know you think ٸ's fine because you're not married, but there's a reason why it's also called ܵ." |

Korean English teachers Hangeulise "coffee" so their students pronounce it "copy". There's no excuse. Don't students first learn the alphabet and how to pronounce all the letters? I know some (eg. yacht) are tricky to explain, but the word "coffee" is perfectly phonetic.

Your argument breaks down because any Korean sound can be phonetically proximated with the Roman alphabet. This is not always true vice-versa.
Let me take your example, Seoul. If we want to treat Seoul as a "Korean" word and not an "English" word, then it's quite easy to see that it's 2 syllables: 'Seo' and 'ul'. It's not rocket science to learn to pronounce it Seo-ul.
I won't argue that someone shouldn't bother to learn hangeul because the Roman alphabet is just as useful. Obviously learning hangeul is simple and infinitely useful when you live here. However this is an English discussion forum, and it's pretentious and unnecessary to assume everyone reading this board should already know how to read hangeul. |

Often when I text-message my friends, I will use hangeul or even the Korean words for nouns, only because I'm talking to a very specific audience -- unlike this general discussion forum. The reason I use hangeul on text messages is because it actually takes up less character-space than roman letters do. |

| Of all the things to get upset about not being able to read a tiny sprinkling of hangeul words on a Korean discussion forum is completely ridiculous. If you can't read it you can ignore it, or learn to read it, or you can *ask*! |

I just find it interesting that half the people here are calling ѱ "hanguel" and the other half are calling it "hangeul." we even got a "hangul" thrown in for good measure. that's why romanization is no good.

No, that's why inconsistent romanisation is no good. The proper romanisation is han () and geul ( ). Hanguel would be the roman version of Han (), gu (), and el () -- ѱ.
For those of you who claim that learning to read & write hangeul is easy (I do agree), is it really that difficult to take a few extra minutes and learn to romanise properly? We are in the business of breaking down communication barriers, are we not? |

I think hangeouaoul should be banned from these boards because it's only pretentious pratts trying to show how good they are.
Whats more it takes away from the main focus of the board, that being how skinny and hot asian girls are. People should be discouraged from learning this countries native language and any newbies seeing haengoooul will be scared and wet there pants.
I think that about covers it

Seoul is a great example. Didn't most of us pronounce it as a single syllable until we came to Korea? If we're going to use Korean, we should use it right. |
Yeah, and so many of us pronounce it as two syllables once we do arrive. I don't think I EVER heard a foreigner say Seoul in the Korean way.
Not saying they don't exist (hey, what's up mith and DW ) but they are a rare breed unfortunately. |

Whenever someone put in english, there's always some Korean folks saying "you should use Korean on this board because it is a Korean one".
As long as it's just a few words or one sentense, I think it's ok.
But hey, I am Korean. so...
How about having a little bit of tolerance on trivial issues like this one?
I think that communication and sharing should never be repressed in any ways.
That's just my 0.02$. |

They don't need fellow foreigners to discourage them -- Koreans tend to do a pretty efficient job of it.
