Hi there!
Was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas of things/places to go for lunar new year where I can embrace the full korean culture thing at this time of their year??!! |

i've heard lunar ny is like chuseok.. everyone clears out of seoul and heads for their family homes, which means it is a GREAT time to explore seoul, because nowhere is crowded!!
if you want to travel outside of seoul, you might have trouble getting train/bus tickets, and besides, traffic on the expressways will be crawling along at 1metre per hour...
yeah, if i wasn't going to japan (where they don't take lunar ny off), i'd explore more of seoul in peace! |

i would rather lick my bathroom clean, than travel inside korea during lunar new year.
just about every major city has some kind of bell ringing event to observe. i judge them to be all the same, no matter what town you are in. |

i am thinking about going riding, probably in yongpyeong, but won't the travel out there be just horrific? anyone traveled out there from seoul for lunar new year before? what do you think the best day to depart would be, to avoid most of the traffic? |

The best way to enjoy Yongpyong is to head out the night before.
Take a bus to Gangneung. At the depot, turn around and get any of the gazillion buses to Huengye (20 mins). It's 10 mins from the hill and consists of gear rental places, yogwans, and shuttle buses to the hill.
That's my plan, anyway. |

I'm going to hit the gym, train right up, and then publicly challenge every poster here who's ever flamed me to a knock-down, drag-out, eye-gouge, mad Russian type, bare-knuckle fist fight until I get some Kill Bill style bloody satisfaction...well...either that or go visit my Granmummy's farm in Incheon. |

so...what exactly happens during Lunar New Year? Is there anything special that would make it worth sticking around or would it just be kinda lonely? I've changed my travel plans and not going to South East Asia I was thinking about travelling in Korea because I'll have 10 days at that time. But now I'm thinking it would be better to save my travelling in Korea for another time and heading off to Japan to visit friends. I've never been in Korea for Lunar New Year so would I be missing out on much? |
