When they say native, do they mean Korean native or Whitey native?

And yeah, it's Gyopo-friendly too.

Thanks Chronic. I'm surprised there wasn't an update about that school, and nobody from there has ever posted at Daves. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Confused

Here's the catch....

Quote:
10. CDI offers block scheduling and no split shifts. All regular CDI classes are taught from 4pm to 10pm on weekdays, 2:30pm to 9:00pm on Saturdays and 10:00am to 7:30pm on Sundays (Times may vary slightly among CDI branches).
Despite the current standard ESL contracts of numerous name-brand institutes in Korea offering 1.8~2.2 million won per month, CDI offers a more competitive salary of 2.8 million won per month.

Weekend work. Maybe worth it for 2.8 though.

If it is good school, you won't hear about it on here. People seldom come on here and talk about how kickass their school is and also tell you the name of their workplace.

You'll hear about it if it sucks. Even a little bit.

So, no news can equal good news, I suppose. But that ultimately depends on how many foreign staff work there and have worked there. They have been around since 1998 and currently have 121 teachers (but of that, how many foreigners?).

I'd try to get on the horn with some of the teachers working there now, and the ones that you may be replacing.

It's probably crap.

If they put that much effort into making a website that hypes them up so much, they probably spent twice as much time figuring out how to manipulate their teachers.

Plus, it's six days per week, with only seven days vacation per year. Great for a final year in Korea I suppose.

Are they kidding? Without weekends I'd be walking around like I was a living Black Sabbath song.

Americans only...hmm, how racist.
hell, someone from bangladesh who has just acquired a greencard is more eligible for the job than I am, apparently- despite the fact I've lived in most of the English speaking world.
Getting sick of seeing the "American only" thing....GET OVER IT KOREANS

CDI ain't kidding!

My girlfriend works there. She is gyopo, has a degree in English from a top-tier university in the United States, and a half-year TEFL experience in Japan. She also trained with and worked for the Princeton Review teaching SAT prep classes in America. She took home a little over 3.5 million last week (with no funny deductions from her pay). This is her first job in Korea.

She works 4.5 days per week. 4-10pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 4-7pm Wednesday; and 10-4pm Sunday. Sure, Sunday is "weekend work," but she has all of Saturday and Monday off. It's still less than 30 hours per week of teaching time.

The school is highly organized and expects 100% out of their teachers. Nearly everything is computerized and many materials are produced in-house. There is no confusion, last-minute schedule changes, or lack of instructor support endemic in most of the hogwan industry. There is also the opportunity to pick up a significant number of hours by covering shifts for absent teachers and volunteering for extra classes. A workaholic could make a lot of money at CDI -- and it'd all be legal. On the other side of the coin, they actually require student accountability in terms of grades, attendance, and in-class behavior. If students don't perform, they're out.

The downsides are a lot of mandatory one-hour "workshops" your first term (a term is 3 months) and above-average amounts of paperwork. They also don't pay your rent.

All in all CDI seems like a really good deal. But one that's only open to those who are truly qualified, enjoy teaching, and don't shy away from hard work in the classroom.

How is discriminating on the basis of nationality being racist?

Incorrect. Obtaining permanent residency in America does not make you a U.S. citizen. A Bangladeshi with a green card would not be eligible to teach English in Korea.

Well to be specific, they said "North Americans only"...

It sucks, I know. But 'dems the breaks. Be glad you're not South African.

They don't pay rent? Unless you enjoy living in a rathole, that would be a rather big chunk of your pay gone every month there, wouldn't it?
