Romanization proposal

The National Agricultural Cooperatives Federation lost 450 million won due to documentation errors by one of its clients, including wrong Romanization of names, reminds us of the importance of correct transliteration in international trade. The NACF bought the letter of credit that a small Korean textile exporter opened in a Chinese bank but the bank refused to honor the L/C because Romanized names in the document were different from what was written on the invoice. In one paper, the exporter was named "Bong Chun" company but it was spelt "Bong Cheon" in another.

The case may indicate the still inadequate international business capabilities on the part of many small-time Korean traders but it also exposes general carelessness, and even the arbitrariness, of individuals and companies in our country in transliterating their names. They invariably ignore the Romanization system prepared by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2000 and, more regrettably, the government authorities show little enthusiasm for its full enforcement.

If the new system has serious flaws, as some linguists insist, the government should improve it. If the authorities believe otherwise, they should give a stronger push for it with further public education and a complete change of road signs. One reasonable suggestion in this regard is having the Foreign Ministry "officially" Romanize the names of individual citizens strictly in accordance with the official transliteration system when they apply for a passport. Company names can also be Romanized uniformly in the course of corporate registrations.

THe system has flaws because it was designed for Koreans to be able to read their own language with English letters rather than with the need of foriegners in mind.
