Actually when I would come to Korea as a tourist I'd spend my first 3 nights in a super deluxe hotel. After an evil plane ride and adjusting to local time, it's nice to have a plush little hotel room.

If I recall CustomX was the guy who was pretty sure his hot looks were worth at least an extra 100K won a month at a hagwon job because Korean mothers would be squirting the moment they laid eyes on him and teaching English in Korea was just something he was doing to kill time before he became an F18 pilot for the navy and he had prepared himself for dealing with Korean culture by eating Korean food once a week. Hrm.

Months and months later no job...

Did anyone else see this coming?

Future posts: "No job! How do I find privates?" "Got a job finally with SLP Nowon... anyone know if this is a good school?" "Director screwing me! How do I break my contract?" "Koreans suck! Leaving Korea soon!" "Had a beer with Real Reality..."

Yikes! You'll never know how close I just came to casting off all doubt and offering a spare room up here for next to nothing, just to be...helpful. (*shakes head*)

Mindmetoo, if ever we meet up for that long-promised Starbucks outing, please remind me that I now owe you TWO double mocha frappuccinos.

whatever man. i decided i'd rather get a job here and make some $ so i was financially secure when i arrived. plus i didnt feel comfortable signing a contract without ever seeing the school or apartment they provided. im not going to argue anymore with you cuz its not worth my time.

Jeez man, they are realy jumpin' on ya....
Anyway, if you're down with the military go chill near the base- mostly airmen and soldiers. Get a hotel room there and hit the bar after the job search, who knows somebody may know somebody and hook you up with a place to stay (or a job).
And to the rest of ya, let he who has not f***ked up cast the first stone.

take an airport bus from incheon to city air terminal in kangnam (10,000). hail a taxi out front and say "yeogwan -- samsung-dong." don't pay more than 40,000 won. sleep off the jet lag and then look for a cheaper long-term place.

Jesus you are arriving with about 4.5 million won. Do you really want to lug suitcases around on buses looking for a love hotel? Get a taxi to half decent hotel and stay for 2-3 nights. One night is no good---you might not even sleep after the flight. Get your bearings -find the subways etc. and then look for a motel or gooshiwon type thing. Or who knows - you might get an offer quickly.

I say treat yourself and get off on the right foot. The misery and penny pinching can come later. Wink

i should have around $4,000. and i bought a RT ticket that returns march 17, which gives me 30 days to find a job even though I dont plan on coming back to the states. i was thinking of just staying at a regular hotel like the sheraton or something my first night, and then go to a yagwon after that until I find a job.

With one month I guess you need to find a job pretty quick. But it can be done. Lots of jobs here.

Also, Korea isn't cheap. Easy to spend $1000/month without rent.
