I'm actually pretty new to this whole Korea thing but it might be Suwon...or Anyang...or perhaps somewhere in the area of Daegu...I dunno...I like hiking and I've done some ok stuff around Suwon.

trust me, i live in daegu. it may be central to a lot of hiking, but this aint no party place. unless you like crap hip hop, and only party on saturday. then you're set.

i would guess seoul has the only *real* nightlife in korea.

Right now, I live in Anyang and there are some great hills to hike around. It's a suburb type of city just outside of Seoul...so I get the small-city feeling during the week...then head more to central Seoul for the nightlife....I'm not too sure about the night life in Anyang but maybe because that's because I'm practically married and have "toned" it down. But from what I heard there is a decent, regular foreign crowd in Anyang.
I really, really like living in Anyang...it feels like a mountainous-hiking sort of city, yet it's only a 40 minute subway to central Seoul.

The only thing that sucks is that if you go to Seoul for the nightlife and stay out past 12:00, you miss the subway home and have to take a pricey taxi ride home (25,000W)...but if you're feeling saucy and awake Twisted Evil , just wait until the subways open up again at 5:30am and go home then.

The same could be said for Suwon as for Anyang, however, Suwon is about double the size of Anyang so there is some nightlife on the weekends. There is some alright day hiking in the area but you'll be more or less dissappointed if you're from British Columbia. Suwon's party scene is mostly hip-hop but it's pretty fun and you meet some pretty cool cats. Seoul is also only an hour away so it's no problem to go in to party. I agree on the taxi thing...sometimes it's just easier to party til the morning.

Everywhere in Korea has mountains so hiking is no problems.

Every big city also has nightlife so no problems there.

Take your pick.

I'd agree with just because. SK is pretty small, so getting around is no problem, especially if you are going to Seoul or any of the cities on the KTX line (Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, etc.). Getting to the mountains can be a bit more challenging and sometimes can require a bus ride of a few hours.

If you are a "bar" person there is no issue as to which city you should live in, as long as it's a decent size. The only real "club" scene is in Seoul, but if that isn't really your thing than you can find bars to hang out in with other foreigners or Koreans anywhere. I live in Daejeon, which isn't known as a party city by any means, but there are a still lots of foreigner hang outs and we still manage to have a good time until the sun comes up. Also lots of cool people around.

There is a national park (Gyeryoungsan) that you can get to by city bus in about 20 minutes, and several other smaller mountains that are within city limits as well. There are also several other bigger mountains (but definitely not the Rockies) about an hour away.

Daejeon. Until it got cold and drab (in mid-November) I went hiking almost every weekend, and there are some pretty decent bars here. An advantage of being a 30-minute bus ride away from a mountain is that you can sleep until noon if you were out the night before and still go for a decent-length hike. Plus it's on KTX (that's the bullet train line which takes 45 minutes to get to Seoul from Daejeon). It's not the most beautiful city but once you're in the hills you can't see it.

Busan.

It's surrounded by mountains

and isn't far from Jiri Mountain for weekend getaways: Nothing beats Jiri for hikers: huge mountain ranges, easy to get lost for days on end, with even more well-managed trails than the average.

In fact, Jinju is the closest city to Jiri, but it's much smaller and doesn't have much of a nightlife.

So...

Busan (old spelling: Pusan)

Yeah, I'd have to say Busan too. Lots of nightlife. Seoul is better for nightlife.. but Busan would be second well ahead of anywhere else in Korea.

For mountains, beaches, cooler summers, and milder winters.. Busan has Seoul beat by a long, long, long mile.
