Interesting - from the *.pdf attachment from the second link, I grade myself as between 1 and 2, so 1+, between 350 and 1100 class hours. Having spent over 1,000 I'd say that proves that classroom hours are more efficient. Good news for you English teachers in fact.

I should add that being a lot older than most students I am now convinced, if I was not before, that the earlier you learn, the faster it is absorbed.

And they also forget just as fast. I knew a kid who could speak fluent german when he was 10 years old... 6 years later, he can't even put a sentence together.

When it comes to languages, if you don't use it, you lose it. This is why I'm only going to learn enough Korean to shop around and get laid. Because once I'm out of there, chances are I'll never speak it again. Confused

Agreed: but as I expect to be here longer than most I'll keep plugging away.

I speak a high level of German(not native-I doubt I would get rated a 5 but I can converse about anything in German) and I will be starting teaching ESL in Korea soon. I am worried that I will lose my German abilities when I am in Korea. With that in mind, have any of you met some Germans in Korea. I might be looking for a German tutor.

Try 3 Alleys in Itaewon most evenings. And there is a German social/cultural centre near the Capital Hotel

You're welome: a bit more detail, the owner is German-Australian and there are quite a few German engineers with GM Daewoo here at present, so that's their local - friendly bunch too.
