I noticed when I started asking my kids about a stupid little flash game called "Maple Story" they really came alive and it ended up being a good topic to discuss number etc. "What level have you reached?" "How often do you play?" "Where do you play?"

I realized we might all be served if there was a semi regular survey of these kinds of things. So when you start talking about Luke Skywalker and Pac Man they don't look at you like "WTF are you talking about, gramps?"

Anyways, if you like, please answer this survey.

------------------------------------------------
What computer games are your kids playing?

(January 2005) Maple Story
http://www.t45ol.com/play_flash_us.php?ID=1047

(November 2005) Kart Rider and Gunz

------------------------------------------------
What video games are your kids playing?

(January 2005) Sony PlayStation 2 seems to be growing in popularity, as well as PS2 Bangs.

------------------------------------------------
What movies have they all seen in the last couple months?

------------------------------------------------
What TV shows do they watch?

peppermint PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2005: they liked X-men on tv, which is some kind of game show.

------------------------------------------------
What comic books do they read?

------------------------------------------------
What bands do they listen to? What songs are popular?

peppermint PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2005: The boys liked Shinhwa, and the girls loved Dongbangshingi , to the extent that they shrieked every time I mentioned them. Shocked

(November 2005) Bi or "Rain"

------------------------------------------------
Who are the current cute movie stars/music stars (male and female)?

------------------------------------------------
Hobbies?

peppermint PostPosted: Sat Jan 15, 2005: the trendy hobby was knitting

------------------------------------------------
Any rumors or legends they're talking about? (eg that ghost woman with the smile who kills people)

Great thread idea. Wish I'd come across it a few days earlier, I'd have printed it out as a questionnaire for my vacation classes (just ended).

Yeh, I think its really important to engage their current interests. I do get them to yammer on about pop stuff but sorry -- memory like a sieve!

Back in December when I saw most of my kids:

The boys liked Shinhwa, and the girls loved Dongbangshingi , to the extent that they shrieked every time I mentioned them. Shocked

the trendy hobby was knitting, and they liked X-men on tv, which is some kind of game show.

Thanks peppermint. I've quoted your suggestions within my original post. I hope more can contribute and I can keep this up, adding items above.

One of my elementary classes is a bunch of rowdy boys who can't stay still or be quiet. I found one day that I was able to keep their attention in English by analyzing what the characters say in StarCraft.

I dropped that into conversation today. The kids looked stunned that I knew about it. Seemed to make them take a second look at the old fuddy duddy.

I must say that the cultural interests of my kids have been a real disappointment. Video games, pro-wrestling, and more video games. Maybe some of them have seen Harry Potter or Shreik. They don't even know anything about sport. A couple of them have a good knowledge of world geography, which has come as a very welcome relief.

The job of a Korean kid is to study. Even my girls I find incapable of threading a needle. When I gave them cookie dough to make cookies they treated it like modeling clay.

They have very little free time. Whatever free time they have, they try to spend it being children and doing things kids all over the world like to do first: play video games.

I've noticed kids lately are into a new computer game called "Gunz". And there's some bizarre, incredibly loud magnet toy. They look like ben wah balls to me. But they toss them into the air and they make a weird sound.

And that stupid dakji like game is back. It starts with a "g". They are 5 or 6 little stone they have to slam down and pick up.

the magnet things are snake eggs, and they're so two weeks ago at my school. Now the kids are carrying around little cups of water with jello-y balls in there.

What ARE those little jello balls? They said something about them "growing". Do they get bigger when they put them in water or what? Do they do anything with them besides put them in water and look at them?

You should also ask them "Who do you like?"

I bet most of the boys will say Kim Tae-hee and the girls will squeel with glee when you mention Won-Bin (should be Won-Bean) or that Daniel Henney guy.

The PSP is getting more popular with the highschool/uni kids.

You're right. I haven't heard them in the halls for the last couple weeks. Weird. That was one fast fad.
