Ok here's the deal. I went home for xmas and planned to pick up a DVD player since they're half the price you'd pay in Korea. Having read the threads here about the different regional formats I brought home a Koean DVD to see if it would work in the player I was planning on buying. I went to the store, popped it in and it worked so I bought the player and brought it back here. Turns out as luck would have it, the DVD I brought home is the only one in my collection that will play. Go figure. The rest just give me the error message about the disc not playing because of regional restrictions.

If I'm understanding this correctly, it is possible to hack the player somehow to make it region free. Can anyone point me in the direction of someone at Yongsan or elsewhere in Seoul where I can get this done? A phone number or address would be helpful. I took a look at the sites that explain how to do it yourself but frankly I'm not tech savvy enough. The player is a Sony NS575P if that helps. Thanks in advance for any help.

I have found the site below to be fairly comprehensive and up-to-date with most region-free hacks for newer equipment. Here is the result for your player:

You could always buy a modded XBOX in Yongsan and be able to watch your DVDs and do some other stuff.

/end horrible advice.

The hacks discussed in previous threads are software ones - codes inputted through the remote control that defeat the restrictions. They're there in the first place because the Chinese manufacturers only half-heartedly conform to the DVD region restriction regime.

DVD players are one product where it pays to buy cheap and crappy. Had you bought an off-brand Wal-Mart type, the chances are good that you'd find a hack for it on a hack-listing site. But because it's a real brand - and in particular, a Sony - you're most likely out of luck. It doesn't help your situation that your manufacturer also produces movies and recordings. Thus, they care about DVD region restrictions, which are designed to limit piracy of their programs. The Chinese guy who made my two players in his back shed doesn't share these concerns, so a hack is widely available.

You can ask around Yongsan for a hardware solution but expect lots of waving hands and "opsoyyo"s. I've never heard of one for a stand-alone DVD player.
