Two teachers who I know personally have tested positive for TB on return to Canada. TB is common in Korea and they vaccinate their children for it (BCG vacination). BCG is only somewhat effective and TB remains a problem. Most Western teachers have not even had the BCG vaccination.
You may be infected with 'latent TB' (i.e. your body has contained but it is still there) and NEVER know it. Only about 10% of the latent TB cases ever become 'active TB'. Only active TB is thought to be contagious. However, latent TB can become active later on in life when your immune system is compromised. So, when you return to your home country you might want to get the skin test done. It is easy, painless, and usually free (or very cheap). If you have been in Korea for a while and you plan to stay here for a long time, you might want to get it done here.
I am off to get my test done today. Stay safe. |
