I have vast experience in two airports: Boston/Logan (my hometown airport for 22 years) and Incheon (live a 10 minute bus ride from there so wind up there a lot for bus transfers and stuff).
Incheon is better by far, and it makes so much SENSE. It is really laid out in a sensible way. More restaurants and stuff would be nice, but there's actually quite a bit there, especially on the basement and first floors, where people rarely hang around it seems. If we could get the stupid train out here already itd be great.
Logan follows the New England tradition of being completely counterintuitve and sort of patched together over decades. There's like six terminals, all laid out differently, with no easy way to get between them. Also it seems like whatever terminal I wind up in is always under construction. The newest terminal is beautiful, but only if you can find your way there. |

It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear.
Douglas Adams
I wil admit that parts of Vancouver Airport are breathtakingly beautiful, but when you throw in Bangalore and Bangkok and average them out, Mr. Adams sure does have a point. |

No, airports are usually not beautiful, and in rare cases is the architecture more than utilitarian (I do like Incheon's architecture). But airports can be wonderful for other reasons.
People are on their way at airports. Most people are in the midst of some adventure or misadventure. Flying is not a "normal activity" for most people- they are doing something exceptional, exciting, frightening, or otherwise emotionally charged.
Airports are as "multi-cultural" as anyplace on earth. At any moment, you can hear a half dozen languages, and pass people from everywhere. Sitting in an airport lounge, like the nice central one in Kuala Lumpur, you see the world pass by, and can fantasize about who all of these people are and where they are going. And have fantasies about your own travels.
Most people, when they travel, are on their better behavior (note I said most), because they are a bit nervous, off-center, and amongst strangers. I meet very kind people when I travel- at home they are probably grumpy office workers, English teachers, or low level business people.
I like airports because I am on my way when I am there, and I am a little part of everyone else's adventure, too. |

Incheon is OK, a lot better than Gimpo ever was but still not great but improving. They have added decent food courts in the gate areas and cheap internet recently which has improved things.
Changi is great though, got stuck there overnight because of a snowstorm here and they had everything and treated us well.
Don't care for Bangkok as its old and crowded and its a pain to get to the domestic terminal however they are building a new airport which is supposed to open this year.
Love Hong Kong but I do miss the landings at the old Kai Tak airport, who needs a roller coaster when you got that one
Best US airports: Well for international travel I just went through Minneapolis/St Paul, US immigration was cool and a short walk for my connecting flight. O'Hare does have an Unos in it but is a pain connecting from international to domestic. Denver is OK, new and good variety of things but out in the sticks, Sea-Tac, I HATE old and confusing.
Best domestic airport in the US: Austin, TX was there once and there was live music and great food from local resturants and brand new, by far the best small airport in the world |

I can't believe I'll never get the change to fly into Kai Tak, or on Concorde- they both sound amazing. |

Someone mentioned Helsinki(-Vantaa) Lentoasema earlier in the thread. I visited it about 60 times last year, and it's very small for a hub airport. Schengen side is good though, pretty wide variety of shops if not many of them, a couple of places to drink, and ok restaurants.
The non-Schengen side used to royally suck - crappy lounges, one crappy cafe and one very crappy (and tiny) duty free shop, much less natural light than Schengen side, and packed full of people. But they've recently extended it and while the executive lounge still isn't a patch on the larger airports, the whole area feels much nicer. And there are far better shops now (I miss Salmiakki Koskenkorva already). |

| No way can Incheon be number 1. There are not that many decent shops, it has no good restaurants, only a Dairy Queen, Burger King and an overpriced Korean restaurant. It looks modern but it is boring. Most airports are boring. The one in Tokyo/Narita is a real drag... |

yeah, Japanese airports suck for somr reason. Haven't been to the Osaka one but I hear it is pretty cool. Nagoya is getting a new one next month as well. Have to check that one out. Can't be any more boring than the one they have now. |

If you are talking about Kansai it is crap. Very modern and clean but even less exciting than narita. |

the new Nagoya one is also being built on an artificial island. I'm kind of looking forward to that train ride. |
