okay... i've been teaching here three years, thinking that i've been doing everything by the book. as it turns out, i haven't. for whatever reason, i was lead to believe that americans could stay on a tourist visa for three months. i neglected to look at the dates stamped on my passport, and was thus here illegally for a while before i left to go get my second and third e-2 visas.
no one mentioned it to me at all. but now i'm trying to get my fourth one, and immigration denied my college's request for my visa. i'm in a world of crap now. i don't know what i can do. has this happened to anyone before?
if you care to respond, i'll thank you not to post helpful advice like "next time look at the dates on your passport, loser." this is something i've already considered.
are they calling me on it because i'm trying to get work at a college this time rather than a hakwon? or does this mean that my entire career in korea is finished? i'm in a panic right now. please tell me some good news. thanks.

You post made no sense. Read your own post again.
If you were already given/granted 3/4 visas even after your were caught overstaying....why a problem with the 4th visa? Makes no sense. Contact a lawyer.

Sorry for the bad news, but it doesn't look good. I had to wait almost 6 weeks for my visa. The only reason I got it was because the owner stood by me. I heard that immigration actually asked my boss not to put the application through. It seems like since the konkuk uni. thing they are really being hard. I don't think that ESL law could do much, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. All I can say is good luck.

Immigration was being slack for the 2nd and 3rd visa overstays, and now they aren't.

I'd go talk to them face to face and explain why you overstayed the 2nd and 3rd times--because you always thought your tourist visa was for 3 months and immigration never said anything different on your way out of Korea twice (!).

In the end it's your responsibility to know these things, but honest mistakes do happen and you're not The Commander Of The Evil Empire (which you'll have to convince them of) and immigration didn't do much to disabuse you of your mistake either (which they'll quickly see is true).
Keep your fingers crossed you get someone cool.

Good luck!

but that's the thing... the big difference between this and the konkuk incident is that i am perfectly legit. i just overstayed my tourist visas a couple of other times. stupid? yes. worthy of a fine and a slap on the wrist? maybe. worthy of me not being allowed to teach in the country anymore? i wouldn't think so.
it really was an innocent mistake. surely others have overstayed their visas before and suffered less harsh repurcussions than this.

I don't know what EFL will do, other than clarify some rules for you.

Sounds like your new employer isnt putting enough effort (ie. $$) to make this minor incident pass through.

I think you have a shot if you go see them. Until then you're probably just another blob of foreigner humanity to them who's overstayed a visa and (presumably) didn't care.

he just found out about this today. he's a good guy, and he's in a tight spot, because he also just found out that the guy he hired the same time as me applied with a degree that was not accreddited. i'm really feeling for the guy. i've been so excited about breaking out of the hakwon biz lately, and really hate being the cause of more stress for him.
so whether the college coughs up the money, or whether they ask me to do it, i'm pretty sure he'll at least make an attempt at that avenue. i hope so anyway.
what he told me, and i was panicky and not listening very carefully at the time, was something to the effect that he apologised to them, he was going to send another visa application, and then mail it out to me while i'm in whatever the hell country i'll be waiting around in.
i think he's dealt with just as difficult problems in the past, but if immigration is looking at me as someone to make an example of, then i'm neck deep in sh..
