I just don't get the conversion from square metres to pyeong...

I got offered a job with a 15 pyeong single room apartment...

I read a pyeong is 3.3 square metres; my wife tells me it is 1.8metres x 1.8 metres... neither seems realistic....

A single room that is 25 square metres?? That's a big freakin' room.

Can anyone give me a point of reference?

Does this mean I can play half a game of tennis in my room... 25 metres... if I fill it with water have I got myself half an olympic swimming pool... Why can't I figure this measurement out?

Thanks for any attempts at explanation... I must be thick.

be careful. sometimes the pyung stated actually includes a fraction of the common areas. (stairs, elevator, lobby, etc). There's an inside measurement, and a total measurment. I can't remember the korean words right now, but I'm sure someone here knows them. 15 pyung is about a medium sized one-room studio.

15 pyong is nice for a single person (its what I have now, and I am fine) but I moved out of an 8 pyong, which sucked.

the measurement not only includes common areas, but often the parking space for your car and the elevator as well.

A couple can do 15 pyong, but I found it just right for me when I had a studio apt with no walls.

These are both the same, and they are both correct. (1.8m x 1.8m = 3.24 square meters)

Not really. A 25 square meter room could be 5 meters long and five meters wide. Or 6.25 meters long and 4 meters wide. Think about it: It's not that big at all. Besides, 15 pyeong would be 49.5 square meters, wouldn't it?

You're not thick, you just need a geometry refresher course. As I explained above, 25 square meters is not 25 meters by 25 meters. 25 is the result of multiplying the length and the width (for example, 5m long x 5m wide = 25 square meters). However, as I also explained, 15 pyeong is 49.5 square meters, not 25.

Thanks everyone for some very helpful explanations of just where I would stand, sit, lay, curse-cause-I-can't-get-away.

And thank you Clamence for the geometry lesson. Finally I get it!

And sometimes the measurement doesn't include the balcony(ies). You just have to make sure you ask.

However you measure it, 10 pyeong is perfect for one guy and his cat, for me anyways. To have 5 more would be a luxury. It can't be too small a place anyways.

My officetel states 18 pyung, the main room being about 9.5 pyung. Kitchen and bathroom at some, but doesn't equal 18 at all. Guess I have a parking space somewhere.

Yes.

Here's a breakdown of the floor space in the popular LG Eclat brand of officetel.

Advertised as 16 pyong (actually a bit more than 16 when you add up the following)

Public-use area: 4.3 pyong <-- your sliver of the elevator, landing, stairs, guard box, etc.

Parking area: 3.7 pyong <-- most foreigners in Korea don't even have a car.

Private-use area: 8.6 <-- This is where you live. Where you eat, sleep, drink, study, cook, shower, surf the Net, raise a pet, grow plants, entertain guests, cry, do immoral things, and pray. (Though I expect to be flamed for saying so) It is an area about the size of my bedroom, and considerably smaller than my living room.
