Clubs that refuse admission to patrons based on race should be exposed and boycotted. By patronizing clubs that discriminate and refuse entry to some, based on race, we are condoning and financially sopporting an appalling practice. Fellow ESL teachers and other concerned individuals are urged to shun establishments such as Hollywood Basement that are known to practice racism and advertise having ` the right to refuse service` Please publicize via internet or print media the names and locations of such institutions. The ESL community ought to stand together on this one as we regularly interact and socialize across cultural and color lines during our tenure here.

i think it's kind of amusing that you want to boycott clubs that aren't allowing you in there in the first place. Isn't that kind of analogous to asking a girl on a date, having her say "No", and then saying, "Oh, well good...i don't like you anyway!"

It was a fake. Wink Felt sort of guilty because it was bigger than the allowed avatar size.

Glad to hear that some find discrimination and humiliation of others amusing. It is obvious that I am not able to shun the establishment as the posting clearly stated that the club shunned me and others, based on race, but considering myself part of the ESL community I, for some reason, thought that other ESLers may be as offended and embarassed by this incident and would want to play a pro active part in addressing discrimination against fellow members of the ESL community. But that is only if people within that community are so motivated.

Before you go jumping on the posters of this board, Samy, you'd probably better tell your story a little more fully. So far all you've said is that the club is racist without any sort of anecdotal evidence to back it up.

The Hollywood Club is a "private" club and can deny whoever they want based on whatever criteria they want... Sorry to tell you, but you are living in unpolitically correct Korea, not politically correct US/Canada...

Hollywood, back in the days when it was illegal to be open after 12, used to descriminate against occupation- they wouldn't let anyone in after-hours they thought was a GI.

You make an accusation against a business for denying you entry based on race: aka, you "pull the race card", and you'd better be able to provide some proof.

So in this case, yes it does matter what your race was. You made it matter when you posted the accusation.

This is Korea -- not the USA. Hollywood is a private club, and if Koreans say, "We don't want Japanese in our club because of what they did to our forefathers", then that's their own business.

If they say, "We don't want Arabs because they are all terrorists", then that's their business.

If they say, "We don't want blacks because they do drugs and sell them", then that's their business.

If they say, "We don't want Caucasians because they steal our women" then that's their business.

For all we know, you might have been a slobbering drunk. How would we know? All we know so far is that you claim Hollywood is racist. You have provided NO proof or background for us to look into.

No! Samy's race doesn't matter. I take him at his word. They don't let him in cause he is against their ideal of perfect patron? to hell with that bar. I've seen it many times over. It is their choice. And, it's my choice to boycott their asses. You simpletons. Exercise your rights. Stand up straight. Back up the brothers. He needs proof? How bout the ole' resume and picture? You know as well as everybody that it's a racist land we're in. Somebody ust change it. Can't hire a Gyopo? Funny, why learn English if you can't get a job based on the fact that you aint white? What's the point. I can change the world. You spineless fish.

First off, I personally find the attitudes of Derrek and the Fonz to be a bit disturbing. You're basically saying that if they are racist, that's their business, and who are we to hold it against them. Are you serious? Let's say a black kid in Alabama is denied entry to the local elementary school (public or private -- does it matter?). What should the judge say to him? "Sorry kid, that's their business." Are you guys for real? I know an elementary school and a bar are very different things, but the issue that you are mentioning is racism, so the principle is the same.

However, there is racism all over Korea. If it is suggested that we all always stand up against it as one, no one would have jobs here. That is unfortunate, but it's true. If we boycott bars that deny entry based on race, then we would also have to boycott every hakwon and university that ever refused to hire someone on the basis of their race. You could essentially prove this to be the case for just about every educational facility in Korea, which makes these "stand up against racism" warcries a bit inconsistent and problematic, despite being very well-intentioned.

It is my understanding that Korea is a very racist place. I think it's terrible to dismiss it by saying, "they have a right to be racist, it's there business." On the other hand, pragmatically speaking, all out boycotts against every racist institution isn't really in anyone's best interest, either (not if they want to stay in Korea, anyway). What can we do then? It's a tough question, indeed, and I don't claim to know the answer.

No, I'm saying that this is Korea.

Get used to it.

Cab drivers don't pick me up because I'm a foreigner.

Welcome to racist Korea. It's their country -- you are just a visitor. It's their culture.

And on the subject of excluding a kid from a PUBLIC school... yes, that is bad. But excluding someone from a PRIVATE club? No, that's not. The club is PRIVATE. I don't care who they try to exclude. I'll find somewhere else if I am not let in.

In my opinion, if this club were "forced" to include you for whatever reason, then that would be an infringement on that club's freedom. Likewise, if the Boyscouts don't want to include a kid because he is an open Athiest, then that's their business.

I feel that America has lost sight of what "freedom" means for ALL -- too many are chicken to speak out and be politically incorrect. They are afraid of loud-mouths like Jesse Jackson (who himself made blatent racist anti-white comments as early as the 80s) causing a stir.

Go ahead and get angry with me -- but take it easy on the Fonz. I think he was simply stating a fact. Why do you find his post "disturbing"? Because it's the truth?
