I really didn't like that girl after she acted like a *beep* during the daughter/mother reunion. That was pretty low class. And she's ugly too. Overall, the movie sucked. Too many stereotypes.

I felt the same way exactly.

Yeah, "Crazy English" is what they marketted that yelling English as on the infomercials. It looks like it caught on in China too. The Chinese are very interested in Korean cultural products these days.

I laughed out loud when the instructor asked the dreaded question, "WHY?"

This was the second Korean movie I had watched, and it's still the best one to date. The first time I saw it, there were no subtitles and it was still one of the funnier movies I had seen.

Saw it about 6 months ago with subtitles and then caught it on TV the other night without.

I laughed a lot more the second time (although I was drinking at the time). A lot of the jokes made more sense.

eg. When the teacher is asking her about liking Elvis, she replies, "It's a carrot." I don't remember what they said about that in the subtitles, but I don't remember catching the joke the first time. !

What's your take on the lawyer sister? My brother and I had a discussion about her English. I figure it's a toss up between non-native speaker or just plain bad actress to account for her poor intonation.

I was able to grab a copy of it with subtitles on bit torrent a month ago. It was the perfect movie to watch with my Korean girlfriend.

She pointed out something that we wouldn't pick up unless we're experts on Korean dialects.

There's the scene with the pizza guy when he corrects the Aussie teacher's verb endings, telling her to put a "you" at the end. Now, many of us are taught to end verbs politely with "yo." My girlfriend laughed because he was teaching her how to speak in a country dialect.

It is maybe the only Korean movie that I quote lines from. No, I quote lines from "Sassy Girl" too. To make my girlfriend laugh sometimes, I look her in the eye and say, "EEELLLL-BIIIISSS-UUUUHHH!! III'LLL BEEE BAAACK!!"

The use of video games, Korean yangban flicks, and the scene with the Level Test soldiers were clever.

If I hear "It's a carrot!" one more time from a student, I'm going to smack someone... I've actually had to add it to my Konglish lesson, I've heard it so much.

(BTW, there was no subtitle when she said it, which is why I missed it the first time, too)

though the scene in the very beginning is funny, "why is my hydro bill 100,000 won? i don't even own a rice cooker!" i've so been there.

I saw most of it recently. It seemed to reflect reality somewhat. The awful pronunciation by the students was on the mark.

"El bis uh" (Elvis) ... "I lubuh you!"

And how creepy was that pizza guy at the blonde teacher's door...?

actually crazy english was 'invented' by a chinese bloke (now a millionaire)- the koreans have imported it from china not vice versa. the chinese guy (who is 100% self taught by the way) coupled the movements of tai-chi/chinese writing actions? while practicing english pronunciation. it was funny to see him giving classes to 1200 people republic army soldiers on the great wall of china and all of them in uniform yelling out english sentences while doing some kind of tai-chi. he also used a stocky bearded bespectacled american native speaker/(teacher??) for some comic relief (e.g. get him to say some chinese phrases so everyone can have a laugh at lousy his chinese is). nevertheless after the lesson/show the native was flocked by chinese trying to get his autograph.

anyway i only saw the latter half of the movie but thought it was absolute crap (maybe something really good happened in the first half??)- the acting was lousy and the story typically pasted over by koreans to be 'nice'- it's a pity because it could have covered heaps of issues and would have heaps of opportunity for comedy.

I read a book last year, "Watertown," I think it was. It was about an English teacher's experience living in the heart of China.

He mentioned that there was a westerner who spoke really good Chinese (the Chinese thought so), who was always on TV. It could have been him. Don't know.
