It's a new thing right? It's a bad idea. The spice level can be above human consumption. The next day you will feel like a burning ring of fire. |

It's new again Apparently buldak comes in vogue every decade. It's very, very, very hot. It's just about as hot as I can stand. My ability to consume it is more limited by the amount of cold water my stomach can hold. Eat a piece, drink a class of water. Eat a piece, drink a glass of water. On the flip side, eating buldak is a good way of fending off Koreans who are like "OH OH DON'T EAT GO CHOO JANG SAUCE BECAUSE IT'S TOO SPICY FOR FOREIGNERS!" You can say, "no no it's okay I've had buldak." And then they leave you alone. |

I had it for the first time a few weeks ago in Shinchon. It wasn't all that spicy and was overpriced, I thought. I was very disappointed.
I' m also a bit pissed because my favorite Chimdalk place in Chongno closed down and was replaced by a Puldalk restaurant.

I have found that most Korean food, while quite delicious, is not as spicy as Koreans think it is. I come from an area with a large population of migrant Mexican farmworkers, and I feel that authentic Mexican food is much spicier...
But, Korean food is still very delicious and enjoyable. |

And as is often the case when I order Korean food that doesn't turn out as spicy as I expect, I can't help but think some cook thought he was doing me a favor by toning down the recipe.

That was exactly my thought upon eating "fire chicken" too!
Then again, gotta remember that gochujang is basically cornsyrup with red food coloring and a dash of pepper flakes. |

The kind I had was from the Hongcho chain, and, while not terribly spicy to me, it actually tasted pretty damn good. Didn't taste like gochujang at all, which is good, considering I hate the stuff. |

Dont know if it is the 'Hongcho' one or not but I like it. It was reasonably spicy and also quite tasty. I went to the one in Hongdae which is very popular and you often have to wait for it- that one is very good. Same chain operate in Itaewon and I had it there and it wasn't very good at all.
I've eaten the fire chicked in Hongdae quite a few times and I like it. It's not just hot, the herbs they add at the end of the cooking process are nice too. |

The place where I ate the stuff had different levels. Level 2 was no problem. Level 4 was not easy. |

I'll tell you what is hot- that mushroom stew place near the new OTwo club in Hongdae. The yellow shed looking building with disney cartoon characters painted on the outside- there's only one thing on the menu and it makes your tongue sweat. |

Okay, you two -- Universalis and Dogbert -- there is no way you've been eating the same buldak that I have. No. Bloody. Way. And I'd be willing to put my money (say, the cost of the meal + beers/soju) where my (aching) mouth is regarding that statement.
I think nobody here has yet mentioned one of the biggest factors behind the success of buldak: Korean girls believe it helps them lose weight. It's considered diet food. |
