if you have a big phone bill you might as well get the perks for it. I got over 500.000 from my UTO card. discounts all over the place.

If you shop at Kyobo frequently, get a Kyobo card. I don't shop there too often these days, but on Saturday I was there and picked up a novel priced at 18,000 won for just over 14,000 with the wife's card. And, if you purchase CDs or DVDs there, get a separate Hot Tracks card.

For freaky survivalist type wannabes like me,- Cultivate a taste inb MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). Grey market millitary meals served in brown plastic. 2500-2800 gets you a full course meal+vegs+bread+kool aide+ condiment kit+2 Deserts! Lovely taste too!
Also, important for NewBeez, F (!) Itaewon!!!! You can get ANYTHING there elsewhere at non-ludicrous prices. Only got to Itaewon to meet people, and even then...

These are a few things my husband and I do to save money.
1. We rarely drink.
2. We are quitting smoking. It isn't easy but we're going to do it.
3. We don't buy CDs or DVDs nor do we go to movies often. We ILLEAGALLY download them from the internet.
4. We only make overseas calls 4 or 5 times/year. We have email and they have email. We also have the messenger programs, microphone, and a webcam and we use them.
5. At home we eat alot of tofu and vegetarian food. We even eat alot of Korean food.
6. We eat more meals at home than eating out. We've also learned to make our favorite meals from overseas at home. Most of the ingrediants can be found here. If we want to go to TGIF, Bennigans, Outback, etc we go at lunch time and share a meal.
7. We buy everything we can on SALE! Espcially clothes!
8. We like to drink expensive coffee so we get it by the case from home and bought a cappucino maker. Beats 6,000 won at starbucks! And we get it every morning.
9. We make our own yogurt at a fraction of the price.
10. We don't buy recreational reading material. We trade books with people.
11. We forego the latest gadgets and trends. Who cares what kind of cell phone, mp 3 player, DVD player you have???
12. We both take on extra jobs. Classes during the holidays, extra classes during the term etc....And save the money for vacations and other luxuries.

Because of the high amount of money I have to send home, I live off a budget of 700,000 won a month. It's taken a while to adjust to this budget, and I do what many have already suggested (rarely go out drinking, rarely eat at western restaurants).

Here's one suggestion:

Get to know your local butcher. It helps if you know how to count in Korean, Chinese numbers, not pure numbers.

I've been loyal to this couple who treat me very well and give me great deals on pork and chicken. They even slice and bread dunkass cutlets for me, which I use to make Schnitzel or Cacciatore. I've recomended the butcher to friends, and they're impressed by how fresh and inexpensive it is.
