When i registered for the new system I thought about using an alias, because about three years ago I was thinking of changing jobs and some idiot (who was reviewing apps) told me "Based on what you write on the ESL Cafe I think you'd do XXX and that wouldn't fly here!" I was pretty pissed off. I am still using my real name to spite that a**hole.

Not ashamed of who I am or what I have to say. Besides, I can't link to the Daegu info site without everyone figuring out who I am really fast, anyway!

I have coined my screen name from the word desultory, meaning "done without any particular plan or purpose." Originally it meant to jump from horse to horse (at least I read that someplace.)

I have certainly have led my life in a state of perpetual desultude- haven't all of us in this profession? I suppose another way of putting it is that I'd been horsing around for years, until my life actually developed a sort of haphazard trajectory- a pattern of chaos.

I've got a few of reasons for using the name "Sloth".

1) As tribute to the majestic South American mammal!

2) As somebody else mentioned, using your real name could screw you over when looking for work elsewhere. Some people just don't appreciate opinions.

3) Put me down for that "incendiary thoughts" thing. Hey, I'll admit it. I like to stir up the pot every now and then Twisted Evil Ah... Q. The discussions we had...

4) My real name is somewhat boring. I've considered legally changing my name to Sloth, but there is too much paperwork involved.

Sit about children, Uncle Bill has a tale to tell you. It doesnt involve Hobbits, but it does involve trolls, who are like Hobbits, but less adorable.

I had an account with my real name. Being someone who has opinions that certain morons (no, not you) feel aren't fit to live (ie: My own) I tended to take an unessicary beating, (I figure that it's the "I'm free to say something to someone I normally wouldnt because I'm immune behind my username" disease that's plagued these message board thingies since day 1) and it reached a fevered pitch when it was pretty much me, Lemon, and Mr. Kalgukshi moderating this board.

After more mods stepped in, I decided, "Screw you bozos.. Mod yourselves!", and I asked Sperling to take my privs away. I was gone and eight hours later the famous Spamming Incident occured, proving what I godly mod I was. (Because the cowards waited for me to leave the job, duh...Smile)

But part of my hope was that the morons (no, not you) would ease off.

It didnt happen. What did happen was that instead of trying to debunk what I had to say, the morons (no, not you) would take whatever personal information they could find about me from here and my site and use it as a personal attack. This was happeneing at the same time I was getting boned by The Ass In Incheon, so I decided, "Screw you bozos... I'm going home." And I asked Sperling to kill my account and I left everything dealing with Korea behind. Shortly after, the morons (no, not you) stopped posting regularly also.

Back in Canada, I realized that it sucked there and I wanted to get back to Korea, where The Most Wonderful Woman In The World was waiting for me. I started reading the board again, and I even wanted to post since it seemed the morons (no, not you) had left.

However, I needed a new account since I knew that the name "William Beckerson" was a red flag to some. The Lemon had made a joke about me being the Forrest Gump of crappy hagwons, so I used that as the basis for this username. I let all of the non-morons (yes, you) in on who I really was and set about enjoying my anonymity. And even though the morons (no, not you) suspected who I was, they didnt bother me the way they used to. They had to deal with Run Forrest Run on his own terms.

Then my cover got blown at the last Cafe Bash.

And since then, I stopped caring.

The end*

*This story may or may not be 100% factual since this all happened, like, a few months ago.

Run Forrest Run - that is a sad story - I didn't realise you were attacked here before. Good you got the balls to rise above it man.

Oops - forgot to answer the Question - yeah, Squaffy is my real name and I'm really a mouse that likes to climb mountains when not teaching.

I use Hyalucent because so far *knock on wood* it's unique and I am the only one using it.

I used to play LPMUDs more than a decade ago, before the WWW, and always went by "Lysander" but since that's Shakespearean, so as more people jumped on the net and the web came along, lots of people started using that name too. Now it's already been taken at just about any site you go to.

A few years ago, the CBC was doing a radio bit on "made up words" and one of the guests mentioned the word "hyalucent" as being a candidate for a new word. He claimed it would mean, "increasing in brightness" *shrug*

I liked the word and started using it as a handle. Since no one else seems to be using it, it's also a good keyword to search for should any of my friends need to find my whereabouts online. You can pretty easily surf your way to my real name but I don't mind. I keep my real name out there as a subtle reminder to self-censor and limit any flamebait that I might be tempted to post. If I ever feel like doing something on the sly, I suppose I'll make a new, more anonymous, name.

My older sister started calling me Harpo way back in the 8th grade. It kind of stuck out to the extent that people sitting next to each other on a Via train mentioned the city of Moncton, NB and someone would say- do you know Harpo? And some Newfy would say, he** yes! Wow! You know Harpo!
Pretty bizarre.

Anyhow, I haven't gone by Harpo since 1992, but I like it as a handle and I transformed it to Harpeau to identify my roots with L'Acadie.

I also like Ed the Sock. I think that he should run for PM. He would do a much better job than Paul Martin.

BYW, hyalucent is a really cool guy. Not only is he a fellow Maritimer, and musician, but we're both living in Eastern Seoul- Nowon- gu (who said no one lives here!)

Anyway, that's my story.
