... dogs, horses,
I'd consider them to be farm-yard animals, I don't think they meant of 'all the farm-yard animals that you can eat'.
Even though now that I come to think of it, horse meat isn't actually that bad, and neither is dog for that matter.
Anyway, I think pigs are great !!! |

Imagine how much spit etc. your dog's walking through on a stroll around the park, which he then walks into your house- [I presume you don't take his outside paws off at the threshold]- that's quite a big deal when you sit on the floor to eat, and lie on it to sleep. |
You mean if you had a dog you wouldn't wash its feet after a walk outside? Everyone I know who has a dog takes the time to do this. Not washing their feet is just as disgusting as if you wore your shoes inside, or walked around barefoot and then came in without washing off your feet.
What I think is disgusting is kids' socks. Kids don't really care if their shoes are on or off. They walk around in all kinds of things. If you work in a no-shoes hagwon, check out the kids' sock--practically black with dirt and muck. And then they go home and run around in the house while wearing those nasty things.
And yeah, I agree that Koreans can be silly about dogs. When I'm out walking my six pound dog and my four pound dog, grown men sometimes take an alternative route just to avoid us. Children scream for their mothers and run in the other direction. Women practically swoon into the arms of the guys they are walking with. *roll eyes at them all* And then there are the ones who will encourage their toddlers to go and pet the dogs. Toddlers usually have some food in one hand. And the parents are basically sending the kids out to be snacks. I've also had to rescue my dogs from ignorant children AND adults many times. So many have no idea how to pick up a dog or even how to pet a dog. My dogs DON'T like getting smacked on the head and that's how the average ajumma "pets" them. I'm at the point now where I don't let ANYONE pet my dogs and when someone asks me if they bite, I say "YES" just to keep them away.
I once had a student who complained that his dog stank. I asked how often he bathed the dog. Once every two or three months! Jeesh, go without bathing yourself for the long and see how rosy you smell!
And yes, dogs will sometimes vomit on the floor when they are sick. So do kids. Actually, I've done that a couple times myself. And yes, sometimes they might make a mistake and poo or pee on the floor. Kids do it in their pants. So do drunks. Dogs will generally NOT mess the house if taken out at appropriate intervals for a decent length of time. And, like kids, they can be trained to NOT make those messes. They will also learn it much faster. How long have you got to diaper a baby? A lot longer than it'll take you to train your dog.
But, getting back to the OP....yes, Koreans are weird about dogs and when you find out why and a good way to make them stop, let me know. I'd especially like to know how we can educate Koreans that dogs DO in fact pee on trees and it need not be a laughing matter with fingers getting pointed. *roll eyes* What's worse is that the ADULTS are often the ones who find that sort of thing so very amusing. Very tiring. |

| I'd rather see the meat dog truck every day than one more of those stupid toy dogs with pink hair. |

It's not the pink toy dogs that are stupid...it's the owners who are stupid. Dogs don't come in pink for a REASON! I think that if an owner really likes pink that much, she should dye her own hair pink...not some poor, innocent little dog. |

there you go see, I had no idea that you wash a dog's feet when you get back from the park as I've never seen anyone do that. All I'm trying to do is understand where the attitude comes from.
I had a friend who used to keep pet rats, everyone would freak out when they heard he had them because it's not a social norm and the first thing people associate with rats is disease and unsanitary conditions.
If you're mainly used to dogs being kept outside in dirty cages, then killed whimpering and snarling, then of course you're not going to associate them with something that's going to be welcome inside your house.
What I suppose you're really doing is taking a social norm from your home country, transplanting it over here, and then complaining when the locals find it odd. |

I think there may be something in confucian culture as regards dogs. I'm not exactly sure but don't they associate dogs along the lines as we associate pigs .. ie. smelly dirty etc ....
Even though on the other hand, I did hear that pigs are among the most sensitive, intelligent and hygenic of all farm-yard animals.
I'd say too that as mentioned earlier, it might have something to do with the floor. Koreans are insane about keeping the floor spotless (at least my girlfriend is anyway). At least we can take off our shoes, but what can a dog do ? |
He can have his feet washed at the door when he comes in. It takes a little more effort, but well worth it, especially to make my husband happy. |

I'm not sure why we have our dogs living with us as a part of our family....perhaps because they have a place in our society. I guess we look at our dogs as protectors...they warn us of danger...if your dog is outside and someone breaks into your house, or your house is on fire....the most your dog can do is bark. Being inside they are better able to do their "job"....I have a cousin who's house burned down, if it hadn't been for her dog she would have slept through the whole thing. Personally I'm not really a "dog" person....I like the independance that a cat has.....I like that I can go out all day and when I come home there are no "surprises" for me....granted cleaning the litter box is something I could live without.....but carrying a poop bag everywhere is a little worse....for me anyway... |

| We have a cat and a baby cohabiting and people normally find that surprising. Especially those ajummas, they would tell my husband to get rid of the cat because cat hair etc may damage my baby's lungs or whatever... |

If you read my post properly, you would see that I'm trying to understand why Koreans act the way they do. You don't know the half of what I go through, bud. Check out my other post "My Korean b-friend Killed My Dog", then judge me. I also admitted I was sick and tired, so get off your high horse.
As for the "dirty ajosshi" (heh, heh) kicking someone's dog, right in front of the owner's face: SOMEBODY PLEASE explain why this happens! A dog is someon's personal property at the very least! My Shar Pei had an asking price of 500,000 won! I wouldn't mistreat someone's expensive personal property, and in the majority of countries damaging personal property is a crime. Do you see why I just don't get it? I feel like I'm going in circles and getting nowhere with this. Well, I'm going to go bang my head against the wall for awhile. Somebody enlighten me, please. |

If you die tomorrow and are left as a corpse, locked in an apartment with your cat ... it'll eat you rather than starve.
Whereas a dog will starve to death before it eats you ...
I'm not really sure what that means, but it seems pretty profound |

I think you've twisted my quote- look at what I said before that

I've just added the highlighting but the words are the same,
So I also am 'trying to understand why Koreans act the way they do' however when I try to empathise with them and come up with a few possible reasons, you accuse me of being on my high horse.
Fine, work it out for yourself then. |

People in the west who've never been around dogs tend to be scared of them too.
I have seen several people walking Siberian huskies in parts of Seoul and people either ignore them or admire them, so it's not all Koreans. |
