| Way back in the days of black and white photography, my mom would buy something called "Coca Cola syrup" at the local pharmacy and give it to us for upset stomachs. Tasted just like flat Coca Cola. I haven't seen it sold in a long long time. |

The shrimp burgers at Lotteria. Evil.
It was the one on the left, officer. That's the culprit wot had me puking my guts out for two days, to say nothing of what was going on at the other end. |

My sister calls me an "extreme eater" for the risks I take- but I have not yet eaten bugs, haggis or live anything (cept the bugs that fly in my mouth when I am on my scooter ). I have gotten sick every couple of years from food, usually when I am on the road. I swear the intestional bacterial infection I got in Chau Doc damned near killed me last year.
A smart thing to do, if you are an adventuresome eater on the road, is to get your hep vacines. There is a lot of hepatitus in Korea, and cheap eateries are a great place to get it. |
I've had roasted crickets here, and they weren't too bad. Haven't tried haggis, but it's on my list. Done the kaegogi thing too. |

Had a similar incident a few weeks ago. Puked pretty much every last drop of liquid out of my body. The *beep* thing is you get so dehydrated that you have to try to drink something..... |
Perhaps one of you armchair nutritionists can confirm or disprove this, but I've heard that Coca-Cola (once you've stopped surrendering your soul to the porcelain altar) is not just good but in fact one of THE BEST things you can drink. Supposedly, it's the best means of replenishing some thing or another that your body needs at that moment.
I'm personally very, very pro-Coca-Cola, so I would be the one to champion it's many wonders. But this "old wife's remedy" was told to me by more than two people who (a) are fanatical health nuts, (b) have an almost religious aversion to soft drinks of any kind, and (c) loathe Coca-Cola for its triumphant Yankee cultural imperialist icon status. So, there you go.

| But it only lasted one day, thought it would be the end of me. |
I thought my end came in 1996 with a batch of lamb curry that I nearly fed to a large contingent of friends, though luckily (or not) taste-tested the night before. There were moments of grim clarity (between the agony, the retching and the... well, let's not go into it) when I seriously -- SERIOUSLY -- thought it would be a good idea to scribble down a hasty Last Will & Testament. |
The general advice seems to be to avoid soft drinks with caffeine. Not sure why.

Oh absolutely, and these same people (the Coke-haters recommending Coke) said so, too. They were very specific that you should drink Coke immediately after the bug is out of your system, and not a moment before. But just how we're supposed to know when it's safe puzzles me. |

Me too. I was even thinking about having one for lunch today, but now I'm feeling a little more weary. |

my Aunty is a nurse and she said the best thing for hangovers was flat coca-cola.
I don't understand it, surely anything flat and sugary would do the trick? |

Caffeine, like alcohol, puts the kidneys into overdrive, thus flushing your system of more fluids than it's putting in. |

Which is why whenver I go out to drink I have two drinks and a glass of water and just repeat that pattern. I never have a hangover.
About the Coca-Cola thing. When I was in Venezuela, I got terribly sick. I couldn't eat anything, I couldn't drink anything. I wasn't vomiting, just the other um end. Anyway, the only thing I could tolerate was Pepsi. I couldn't even drink water. All I had for 3 days was Pepsi. I still think Pepsi saved my life. I always thought it was the sugar that helped, not the caffeine, but I don't know.
Too bad the Pepsi here tastes funny. |

I had food poisoning on Sunday night after eating some dodgy sushi Wasn't too evil - I'm kinda used to it - the milder bouts, that is
Was more upset by the loss of sleep than the vomiting and numerous toilet trips! |

| Sandwiches from any bakery with those bits of 'crab residue', long, red and cold. Twice in one year and I said never again. I was vomiting so hard on the toilet that I knew if I didn't maintain consciousness, that I for sure would have choked on my vomit and died. What a terrible death, being discovered by a cleaning ajumma with your pants around your ankles.... |

I'm sort of surprised at the amount of posts from people claiming they've been made ill by bad food. I've lived in Seoul for five years, have run the gamut on the beware-list of foods to avoid (raw summertime shrimp = YUM!) -- and the first time in over 10 years that I was violently ill was because of a virus.
