Am I just unbelievable unlucky or is there a new crackdown that I missed hearing about? I made an illegal left turn in Suwon and was waived over a few hundred feet ahead by a couple of intimidating looking motorcycle cops. I suppose I could have played my round-eye card a little stronger (as I've done in the past) but knew I'd made a illegal turn and couldn't help but radiate sheepishness. The officer wrote me up and now I need to wire 60,000 won to the fine, fine city of Suwon. Has anybody else gotten an actual ticket (no camera ticekts)?

They do this once a week in Anyang outside my work.

About 8 police officers. One stands next to a tree and radios to the ones down the road. They do it for about an hour and really the number of cars they pull over is crazy.

I didn't get the ticket myself, but I did tell the Chica to make the illegal left turn. She happened to wait too long and did it right in front of the police station. I tried to give her a story to play it off, all like "We're lost help us" crap, but she didn't say that. She did get it discounted, though.

I have been pulled over a couple times!
I just speak English really fast and move my hands alot!
they just stare at me I keep soeaking until he says OK OK GO GO !
so I never been written up..
had plently of camera tickets..
when ever I get pulled over I make it real hard for them!
becuase I HATE COPS!!

yeah due the bad economy the police have there cronies out there everyday looking for cash!! mostly cellphone users and no seatbelts..
drunk drivers etc.. Its all about the money!
its a fast and effective way for the mayor to reach to the monthly quoter needed.. ITS BS!!!! but every country does it..
you really think they are there for your safety? they couldnt give a flying *beep* about us.. its our cash they want!
just as they make korea a non parking zone! footpaths way to wide and roads narrow. with no parking.. knowing you will park there. and then can be towed! 40 for the tow company and 40 for the government!
thats one of there big earners!

I was on the 603 from Incheon Airport into Seoul and on the highway bam the driver gets nailed with a ticket. I was shocked on a multitude of levels.

First: After witnessing traffic violations that would rival Montreal cab drivers I didn't think they actually wrote tickets. I thought traffic laws here were just a suggestion.

Second: Most of the time you figure they leave bus drivers alone because I mean they are pro drivers and are on a time schedule where if they do not keep it, it is their ass in a sling.

Third: We were speeding, no question, but we were passing NOBODY!!! I mean we looked like a stock car stuck in first compared to the rest of the cars going by us. Maybe the cops figured that they could actually CATCH up to the bus and the others they had no chance of catching up to.

Sorry about your luck on the ticket though.

What I don't understand is WHY the cops don't seem to ticket the stupid taxi and bus drivers in korea. Or why they don't ticket red light runners or drivers who drive through the crosswalks with people walking who have the green walk light! Or the motorcycles on the sidewalks! When koreans take the written test for a driver's license...it clearly states that...don't do the above!!
Yeah...I hear...bus drivers are in a hurry and taxi drivers are in a hurry. B.S.!
What...drivers in other countries are also not on a schedule or in a hurry!?!? But you don't see the "crazyness" as much as in korea!! I am talking above developed countries. Is...are koreans developed? I think not when it comes to respect, manners and rules of the road.
Look at the amount of money cities could make by ticketing and towing!!
Start towing and ticketing and idiots will get the message. But...keystone cops...korean cops are.
And the stupid taxi drivers who stop in the middle of the road to pick up and let off passengers! Unreal! But that is also the fault of the passengers for not telling the driver to pull over. I know when I take a taxi...I tell the driver to drive slowly and obey the law or no money. Bus drivers I tell them to slow down. And they do...but speed away when I get off.
Is it just ignorance?
Getting a ticket...I would not mind...I knew/know right from wrong if I broke the traffic law! Same with speeding! Drivers want a warning instead! Heck...they have a warning...the speed limit is posted up and down the highway and all over the inner city roads.
I know a guy who actually has knocked motorcycle riders off their bikes when they come up behind him on a sidewalk beeping the horn telling him to move! Move he does...on them. He just makes an excuse...sorry...you scared me and I reacted. You should not be on the sidewalk anyway!

I'm generally pro-law enforcement and don't try to weasel my way out of tickets like a whiny biatch when I mess up and get caught.

Funny, I had a little debate with my girlfriend about that tonight, and it all boiled down to the bbali, bbali mentality, saying that people in Seoul are busier and have to be in a hurry more than other people in the world.

"Oh, and the people in New York City aren't busy and have nowhere to be."

We were both trying to figure out in our short conversation the root of this mentaility. My hypothesis is that people think that the world will fall apart if they are not there three seconds faster. And this state of mind comes from the notion that people think that what they are doing is more important than anyone else. And that boils down to a "world revolves around me" mentality, which any child development psychologist would say is a feature of stunted emotional growth.




Okay, well that last bit really ticked her off.
