All I can say is ~~ DON'T DO IT!!!!!

Back during Lunar New Year-2003, I went on a Soju drinking binge of 8 bottles in 12 hours, sometimes out of the bottle. Really bad idea!!!!

Bottles No. 1 thru 3 (Som Gyup Sal Restruarant, MyongDong)= I was comfortably numb. Had a cool conversation with some japanese chicks at the next table. A fun time.

Bottles No. 4 thru 5 (No Rae Bang, MMC, DongDaeMun)= I was singing like Frank Sinatra (on crack, of course) and went to see a Korean movie. the freaky thing was, I started to understand it Confused

Bottles No. 6 thru 8 [actually 2 pitchers of Soju c'tails] (King Club, Itaewon)= I felt like a combination of Superman and a dude who didn't give a Shi'ite about anything. I felt invincible! Until I passed out on the dance floor. The waitresses picked me up and showed me the door and I proceeded on my way home.

I was down for the count

The only thing that saved my life was a cool-ass bubble bath the next day- an awesome way to sober up! Cool

Before questioning my soju consuming abilities, I think you need to find the "Soju Etiquette" tread and read my post re: "The Man Shot" (haha...)

I can vouch fopr Chillin Villin. He is infamous in our little circle for soju consumption. Although, we have yet to have an all out Sojuthon.
I managed to wein my wifes fathers affection by drinking All the men from her village under the table. About three liters I believe

Nah, soju is mega-good for you. The more you drink the better of you will be.

Be like one of those yuppies always getting round with an Evian water bottle, only not water.

Come and thank me in six months when you can no longer deny the health benefits.

the good thing about soju is that it has formedahyde, so if you drink enough of it and die, you don't need embalming.

cool!....isn't it?! Very Happy

btw~ please check me on spelling.

I lost my soju drinking buddy...but we use to always start with 2 bottles of soju with samguepsal then start the marathon of Jim cokes, and shots of tequilla.. and then sometimes back to Soju for the 6am snack crowd in some tent !

World of the Morning (Ǿħ) had a story a couple of years back about a Ukrainian woman who only ate dirt. Watching her shovel spoonfuls of it into her maw and chew gives me nightmares to this day.

If you can't drink, stay home. If you worry about getting hangovers, stay home. So go out drink all you want, have a good time. Drink beer, soju (flavoured or not), tequila, and whatever else. If you are a woman you will wake up with a hangover. If you are a man, you will wake up feeling thirsty again and spend the next day drinking too. Only thing flavoured soju is good for is pounding back a few before you go into a bar. It add to your thirsty state and on your way to a good night.

As for Korean beer, after you get past the first beer, they start to taste better. At least no worse the bud or canadian. Much better premium beer back home though than here though.

Anyway, I think it pathetic how so many foreigners come on here and write about how they can't drink in this country. It is more fun to go out with some Koreans and watch them try to keep up either on beer or suju. Then you can laugh at there 3 day hangover, while you wake up feeling good to go for round 2 on a Saturday night.

Anyway, just go out have a good time and worry about the next day when it happens.

I have never had a hangover from Korean beer.....wake up a little fuzzy for a bit, but that is about all.

Now Soju, that shit is different....on my second night in Korea I decided to try Soju. I had sunk 6 beers before hand and ordered a bottle for myself and a friend. We drank the bottle, left the bar and that is about all I can remember. Apparently we went shopping, Norea Bang, played pool and watched a Korean movie. I cannot remember a thing....

I often wonder the same thing. If there is a heaven, I hope they can find a place in there for Crazy Sand-Eating Ukrainian Woman.

Oh, I would forego the bit torrent and pay actual money to watch a documentary on THAT.

My last encounter with soju ended at 11 AM the next morning in the Immigration office.

At least that's what I think it was.

Last I can remember it was about 5 AM in the morning and I'm fighting with the cab driver. I don't have any money. It's dark. I don't know where I am. The next thing I know I turn around and there's a cop.

He takes me somewhere, I fall asleep on a chair. I wake up some undetermined hours later absolutely freezing in this small room. I got my coat, hat, and scarf on and I'm still chattering away.

I ask the guy sitting at his desk to close the window. He won't do it. One time, two times, three times. Please close the window, I'm freezing. He does nothing. Maybe he doesn't understand. I take off my hat, my scarf, my shoes, my socks, my coat, my shirt. I'm engaging in some kind of off the cuff Temperature Protest. My clothes are piling up on the floor. I start loosening my belt. Finally that did it. He got up and closed the window.

Twenty minutes later, two guys from the office drove me back to my place. They ask for my passport and the 6000 won I owed the cab driver from the night before. They tell me not to drink anymore soju and that was that. They were hell of a nice people.

All in all, it's just another night I wish I had back.

OP, best of luck. But that soju is some wicked stuff.

I seem to recall breaking things from time to time when I drank too much soju.

I can't drink soju (or other hard stuff) the way I used to, and I can't say I'm sorry about that. Nowadays I prefer beer and wine--the taste can't be beat. But if budget is the main consideration, soju is still a reasonably cheap and effective anaesthetic.
