|
|
Any people out there that miss playing President and A$$hole (or simply known as 'A$$hole' to many. But I threw in President and the $$ as a token appeal to the mods about the filter dodge, because most people would not recognize the game as simply being 'President'), as an alternative to Poker?
Back home, this used to be the highlight of the pre-drinking evening, before we'd go out clubbing. Even if getting drunk was not in order, the strategy and camaraderie element, always made a fun night.
I've always been curious about making a regular night over here, where fellow enthusiasts can meet up at someone's place, play some cards, before going out on the town (or end up staying in and playing till late.) |

If you know how to play gin rummy, you can play this. There are some small variations, but the principles are usually the same. You can get into things where the president makes a rule like 'you can't use names. If you do, you drink' or 'no swearing, or you drink' until a new president takes over.
But, me and some of my friends often played without the drinking rules, except for having the a$$hole always having to sweep and deal. We would go hardcore into the game's competitive nature and subtle strategy, and try to screw people into demotions, or discreetly influence someone's promotion. |

a$$hole, or more affectionately known as simply 'hole, is the best card game in the world.
I've even taught it to my students (Grade 5 and above), but i change the name of the game to 'pabo' for their sensitive ears. They love it. It used to be a friday tradition in my classes. I always hated them playing that 'one-card' crap.
I have noticed that there are regional variations when i travel thru north america. Where i come from, we have the president giving his 2 worst cards to the 'hole, and the 'hole giving his two best cards to the prez at the beginning of each round. 1 card in the case of vice prez and vice hole. No one can sweep the cards, or touch them on the table except the hole. If the hole notices anyone touching the cards on the table, he can exchange cards with the offender regardless of the offenders position (this is known as Turkish prison rules). But no one is allowed to tattle to the hole. 2's are the highest, followed by a's k's etc down to 3's. First card laid is the 3 of clubs, again regardless of position. If a president stays in 'office' for three consecutive rounds, the/she can institute a new rule which must be followed under punishment of "the Drink". (The drink is a communal tumbler in which everyone pours a little bit of what they are drinking which fills the glass-it's ok if everyone is drinking beer, but whenyou have some people drinking hi-balls and others drinking other things, it can be quite a punishment.)
Anyway, If you're near Wonju, I'm in for playing. |

MOst board game cafes should have a copy of The Great Dalmuti, which is a variation of Asshole with more cards at the low end and fewer "top" cards.
Asshole is fun for a short time... but I prefer card games that challenge the mind. Watten, for example, is my favorite.

*high-fives* that's almost identical to how we did things back home, too. Jeez, and I thought I was the only one who taught the game to students. In my first year, my advanced middle-school class and I played a$$ in our last class of the day on Fridays. It's hilarious when you can hear Korean students say after they first look at their newly dealt cards 'ok, who dealt me a$$ hand', 'looks like I'm gonna be a$$ again'.
Also, back home, we would include Jokers as the high card, which would kill all, including sets of 2's.
And hopefully you guys play by the rule of 'you keep going around over and over until everybody else cannot play on the high card of that particular round.' I played with some guys in Kelowna, who insisted that we must go around the table once, and whoever had the highest card of that go around, starts a fresh new round.
And also the rule of 'if you 'pass' once in a round, you have to keep 'passing' until it is played out and someone wins that round (but not the whole hand). I've met some that like to play a rule of 'you can still play in a round, even if you passed earlier.' I believe that if you pass once in a round, you have to wait until the high card of that round is played, and a new round is started.
(I'm assuming you guys spot the difference of what I mean by 'round' and 'whole hand' )
Anyways, I'm in Wonju once a month, but at a meditation center, and can't go out at nights. But as for Anyang, that's a definite go. Especially if we can drag Chillin Villain along, who I hear is moving to those parts. |

Those rules are how I learned how to play... only we go Jokers (if there are any), 3's, 2's, Aces, King's all the way down to Four's, and the Four of Spades (or Clubs, one of the black cards) is the first person who goes when you start playing. We never had any rules about the hole (or janitor, as was our other name for it) being the only person to sweep the cards. |

One of my personal favorites, as well.
Here are 2 sites with VERY detailed versions & variations:
http://www.pagat.com/climbing/asshole.html (put in the more common word for sphincter where the *beep* is)
and
http://www.realbeer.com/fun/games/games-353.php
In Texas, we played a variation called 'Dixiecrats' - same basic rules, but HEAVY Southern drawls, & the 'low person' was a gopher for the round. Joker/Jester allow a person to give drinks to any person above him/her ('By Mandate of the People!')
Regards,
G.

I'm down with whatever. Someone PM me if something gets lined up.
BTW, if any of you want to brush up, you can download this game. This guy developed a game after the President model, where you can play vs. 3 computer opponents. Some of the rules may not be what some of you use, but everything else is the same. |

I used to play that a lot in high school. I'd be down for a few hands, if it doesn't involve hours of travel. |

I played that game when I went away for summer school when I was in high school. However, the kids I learned it from called it "Feudal Wars," and the ranks were the Lord, the Vassal, the Knight, and the Sh__. |

We are mainly in the Pyeongchon area. Hagwon-ga or around Beomgye. I recommend here, but open to another location if you have one. |

Always played (it) back in Canada but haven't played it here in Korea.
Instead I learned another game which I actually like a little better.
(It's a little less complicated)
I was surprised to find out it is the sister of A$$hole.
It's called $hithead.
(Funny how two of the best card games I've ever played have such offensive names. Changing the name for kids was a great idea and (babo/pabo) was a great choice...)
Good thinking.
And I'm annoyed that I am just finding out the Anyang crowd plays only 2 days before I leave...*shrug* oh,well such is life. |
