I had a dream last night in which I had basically just returned home from Korea (it was set in the present so I don't know why I was back). The weird thing was that I felt what amounted to absolute despair in the dream. All I could think about doing was getting back to Korea as soon as possible and in any way that I could. So I've been thinking about the dream today, and I've pretty much realized that this really is about how I would feel. I have actually become very much attached to Korea...is this a sign of some kind of impending mental disorder?

No, it just means that you like it here.

I used to have the same dream all the time the first year I lived in Turkey. I liked it there so much that I would have terrible dreams of waking up back home surrounded by all the ordinary, mundane things of home, and the only thing I could think of is how I need to get back. And then I wake up relieved that it was just a dream. I've heard of others who have had similar recurring dreams. It's perfectly normal.

However, I've never had that dream here because so far, I haven't really had a very good time here, but I'm planning to change that this year.

Yep, I had dreams like that several times in my first year.

I'm now on year three, and still glad to be here. I'd take it as a sign that you're happy here, but some little part of you feels like this could all be taken away from you at any moment.

Wow. Yeah. I've had that one quite a few times since I got here (and I'm also in my first year in Korea.) Mostly I'd find myself in Nova Scotia quite suddenly, usually at about the same time in the dream that it was in reality, and realize I'd somehow made a mistake coming back, or had only intended to come home for a short visit but had forgotten to get a ticket back to Korea.

They're good though, in a way; as soon as I wake up and realize I am indeed still in Korea, I'm usually so grateful for it that it makes the long hagwon day go down a whole lot more easily.

Wow, I must be more attached to Korea than I thought. In waking life, as I think many of us do, I b*tch about this or that about Korean life and say "In the U.S, we do it this way, blah,blah,blah" But sometimes I have these dreams where I am back in California, wandering the streets, and I am walking around frantically trying to find any store with Korean writing. Shoot, I've even had dreams of losing my job here and I wake up terrified Shocked

I lived in Germany for a year, and when it was becoming time to return home to the U.S., I was getting nightmares of leaving the airport to a land full of billboards and McDonald's signs.

When I actually returned home, I made it my goal to somehow leave the country again for a foreign land and learn to appreciate it while I was there.

So I'm here.

::sigh::

I get the same dreams (even the setting is Nova Scotia!). The dream is usually along the lines of I went home prematurely, without an idea of what I am doing home, and I want to get back to Korea to finish my contract but I already broke it by leaving...or something along those lines. I usually have these dreams after I have a really bad day (so actually quite rarely), and I wish I was home.

When outside Korea I have had bad dreams of being back in Korea. While in Korea I have had weird dreams of being back in NFLD and either finding myself bored and jobless and broke at mom's house, or else finding that the whole province is also now over 90% Korean anyway. (Wouldn't that be weird?) So I sometimes dread this place, but also dread whatever alternatives there might be.

And I thought it was just me! I had that dream very vividly last year. I had done a runner at six months and was driving about in my home town moaning incessantly about how bored I was. I was also trying to figure out when my current visa would expire so that I could come back to Korea.

Ive had no dreams of that kind this year. Not surprisingly.

I totally have this dream as well. I wake up back in Canada and I'm like "crap! How'd I get here! How do I get back to Korea?" And then you wake up and go "oh, whew."
