How can I get a faster start up?
Specifically I would like to get unused programs to not start automatically.
My Sony Picture Package VCD Maker and Picture Package Menu are always in the notification area. Also here are Norton Ghost, SIS Utility tray, C-Media Audio, Volume, Spyware Guard, Norton Anti Virus and Norton Internet Security. I think I can do without the Sony starting everytime.
When I got my computer it was on before I could blink, and now it seems to take about two minutes to stop processing stuff and sit quietly.
I use Spybot and AdAware, plus Norton (which contributes to slowness), so it's probably not a junk problem slowing me down. |

from the start menu select 'run', type 'msconfig' in the box, hit enter, select the 'startup' tab and click off the programs you don't want to run when you start windows. |

before taking beaver's advice, check out www.blackviper.com . There's a good rundown of what the services running are and wether or not you need them.
As well, you might consider a less resource hungry anti virus program. I've been using AVG antivirus for the last few months, and have a faster, virus free computer. |

Cutting services will not help boot times significantly. Also, deselecting programs from "msconfig" probably won't do much except save some RAM overall.
It's Norton that is slowing your boot time.
Run "Bootvis" a tool from MS that will diagnose the boot hangs. Sometimes it's the network...in fact, it's usually to do with that, but more specifically, Norton Internet Security + network = wait.

I use Startup inspector:
http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php
It organizes them in terms of not needed, optional, and needed. It greps the net and lets you know exactly what the program is for.
Turning off some services also works. Ctrl+alt+del to see what processes are running when you start up. Use the services tab to figure out which running processes you can disable. I'm not sure why the previous poster thinks this won't speed up your boot time. Since the computer has to load the exe process at startup time... |

The services that can be cut out of most systems aren't the ones that will save the boot time.
I have my system setup for gaming, which means I can't even do a Windows update without enabling 4 services. This however, is not the secret to a fast boot.
Unplug your network, boot and then re-boot. The first boot with no network may hang, as Windows looks for the repair sometimes while booting. The re-boot should be faster...and faster than normal as well.
Anyways, what I should have said was that the services which can be disabled and still have a functional, networkable computer won't save noticeable time.
Heck...try it yourself. Go to vipers and do the gaming strip down....time the boot. Then set them back to default and see. |

I just replaced Norton with Avast, as per the other thread. |

Rule of thumb, don't watch your computer as it starts up... do something else. Same applies when you are running your antivirus program or doing a p2p download. |
