Think you know all - Mr Hollywoodaction- seems you have been working for private companies too long (that is, Hagwons, Univ's and companies).
Well those tricks don't work in the Public Schools.... seems you have never worked for one - maybe you are not qualified - perhaps no TESOL/TEFL cert or just not a qualified teacher.
Unless you have the experience and know what you are talking about - it is persons like you - who spout your ill-educated advice to other teachers on "Daves ESL Cafe" that is giving Dave's Cafe a bad name - a place for unexperienced - illinformed teachers to comment once in a while with paranoid, anti-koren teachers/schools info - whilst your Soul purpose in coming here was to travel from your home country - to Korea to pay off your student debts - mess around with naive, innocent students then take off back to the safety of your home- country?) How correct am I?
Unless - you are 100% certain of what you are talking about - do not answer to posts on this site - you are only offering wrong, and misleading advice to teachers who are seeking educated and correct info. |
I was about to add to my previous post that you're probably right in saying that the school doesn't have any malicious intent, but that he needs to be aware that such scams do go on. Something strange is going on, but maybe itsn't as bad as it appears. It just looks worse than it is because the 'manager' doesn't seem to want to answer any of his questions. Again, it's hard to know exactly what's going on with the little information that he has posted. So, there. You seem to have hit it on the nose with your explanation. But, after seeing your post, I've got ask: Where do you come off to be insulting people like that? The arrogance of it is just amazing. You've made lots of assumptions for someone who knows nothing about me. Me, Anti-Korean? My wife and son are Korean, for heaven's sake. I may be one of the few who actually consider this place home. Just to let you know, I've done my graduate studies in Tesol from one of the most reputed universities in the field. Oh, and I've never had a student debt (unless you count the money I borrowed to start my own company while I was a student, which I paid off two months after beginning to do business). Taking advantage of gullible students? Why? Because you know they should be learning Chinese instead?

Exactly - and I have nothing against you.. my apologies.
What has continually annoyed me though- is that as a foreigner who has been here several years - (many/many) and has worked in all segments - univ, Hagwons, companies, Public Schools etc - is the continual use of this site/and others - to complain and degrade any and all facts of korean customs, policies, and activities of Korean schools - by foreign teachers who have recently arrived and found Korea to be different to the home-country from which they just arrived.
I know and am the first to admit that many Hagwons, recruiters etc are filthy, dirty deceiving persons who should never be trusted - however it still suprises me that many foreign teachers arriving in korea - still choose to work for these recruiters and Hagwons - who will (mainly) ONLY mess you and after only 10-11 months of good, and dutiful service will dismiss you - whether on good or bad terms.
Meanwhile, I find many posts on this site that speak ill and bad of Public School Teaching positions - where actually - the teachers are much safer, treated better, always have the salary paid - on their exact pay-date, cannot be fired before their contract is over, are better looked after and cared for, and yet techers who have NEVER worked in the Public School system before are always too eager and forward to talk ill of such positions and schools without having any prior experience of having worked in such a job themselves before.
Please do not talk ill of things unless you have 100% certainty that the issue is what you have experienced directly - because too often I find teachers on this site saying things about issues that it is obvious they have no real experience of. |

Apology accepted.
Yes, lots of teachers complain needlessly (I found myself wondering how joyful it would be to work with one particular lady who was having a fit at Anam Market because another store was closed on that day eventhough it usually is open everyday of the week). But the blame doesn't always fall on the teachers shoulders. Simply put, not all employers are fit to work with foreign employees. Sure, people rant here. If it wasn't here, it would be somewhere else. But, you need to realize that a rant is sometimes nothing more than someone venting their frustration. Don't take it as face value. Personally, I find it more efficient to visualize a particularly annoying person's head being crushed by the weights as they go up and down on the machine while I work out, but that's just my twisted self. Just kidding. Actually, I couldn't care less. An annoyance is just a fleeting distraction. |

There is one more reason - why I instantly mistrusted the OP teacher who placed this POST in the first place -
it was the TITLE of his Post - that is - "Bank account in recruiters name"..... and the post.....

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum-hope life is good. Having a few seemingly typical teething problems with the recruiter - even at this early stage imagining horrific forms of torture is a stress reliever.
One thing is he got me and my girlfriend too open two bank accounts, one he can access which the school pays into and the other we can access which he then pays us into. |
However, the OP title of the Post - states "Bank account in "Recruiters name"".
Now is the bank account in the "so called Recruiters name or teachers name....? well the fact is - they should both be in the teachers name.
So - from the very start - the teacher began by decepting the general public
so the fact remains - can the Teacher be trusted ? as even their post remains false and misleading....

"I have met many teachers who have given falso certificates, references, testimonies etc - who cannot be trusted - the title and first post given by the OP here is totally misleading and false....."
I've met a couple of those, but not many.
Don't forget the point you made about schools that a few bad apples give a bitter taste to the rest. |

Exactly my point... perhaps if the teachers were more honest - the schools would also be more honest..."

No. You need a work visa BEFORE you enter the country. Maybe you are thinking of an ARC. Any employer who asks or expects me to work illegally without a visa is an employer I don't want to work for.
This whole thing sounds shady, even after it has been explained. Are there still "normal" public-school jobs out there? |

I agree with about contacting efllaw for help. You have a right to ask questions and get advice on what to do.
When I worked in Korea for public schools, I was paid by the school and had a contract with them. They paid directly into my account, with no hassles in two years other than the very occasional day late.
Are all recruiters pond scum? The few (very) I've had contact with basically weren't interested in me because I'm older and experienced. I got my current job with the public schools on my own, without going through a recruiter. |

Hi, well good to see the debate has been raging. Well apologies to anyone who felt the title of my question was misleading. I can assure you that was not my intention as this would be entirely pointless for the purposes of getting matters cleared up for me.
I have no interest in having silly bitch about my employer but just thought the bank account set-up could lead to problems.
Just to clarify:
We came into Korea and worked at a summer camp with temporary work visa.
We signed a contract for 2 million a month to work with a man who has a language institute? (although I'm not sure if there are any students)- however the job was at a public elementary school.
Our mistrust has developed as he has lied about certain things
(promised us a two bedroom appartment - we're in a 1 room studio,
said he'd pay for a DHL courier for our transcripts - now he denies this
said he'd pay ALL expenses for Japan visa run - now he says he'll pay for a flight)
So naturally a man who will unashamedly lie raises suspicions when finicial matters arise.
We have two bank accounts (and one of the posters was correct, I apologise), they are both in our name, however he is the signatory, has the pin number and all control over one of the accounts.
Just wondered if anyone else had similar experiences.
About the spending all our time drinking in Itaewon drinking...
hmmm sounds very similar to the parental intrusion into your personal life that employers try. shouldnt bother to justify it but I will. Trust me I would have tried to sort out the other issue but our employer has left town for the holidays and we werent going to sit in the one room studio crying about the possible dodgyness (or not) of the situation |

Okay - I used to trust ESL-Law before - however after reading that - they seem to just be a team of scum-bags making money of ESL Teachers sometimes unfortunate situations -
I once needed there help - and emailed them a 10-page email about my situation - and they just replied with a standardised email - that just asked simple questions - they probably email everyone - that I had already informed them about in my 10-page email....
However this time - they seem not to have done their research (they are based in Japan) and the 2 (two) bank account thing has already been investigated by BOTH the POLICE and the GOVERNMENT Deapartment involved in Foreigner Relations - and it was deemed....
"there is nothing Illegal about it (there is nothing wrong with it)......
so where EFL-LAW comes OFF criticizing shows proof that they are nothing - just a bunch of loser Lawyers who run scams themselves and KNOW nothing of what they are talking about.....
making money from Unfortunate Teachers problems.......
IN FACT - I have been teaching Korea almost 6 years now - 2 1/2 years in the Hagwons and 3 1/2 years in the Public Schools - ALL of my last 3 1/2 years in the Public schools I have had 2 bank accounts - one where the school pays the money INTO and the School Manager deducts TAX, etc and my Korean associates salary - and I am left with MY SALARY - ALWAYS CORRECT and ALWAYS on MY PAY-DATE - never Late....
I KNOW exactly how much money is going In and OUT and I have always been happy with with -
NOW lets take a HAGWON approach to THINGS - lets say a typical small HAGWON with 120 students paying 160,000 won per month - gives a NET INTAKE of 19,200,000 won (19 million won) - the 3-4 korean teacher get paid 1,200,000 (4.8 million won) you are paid 2 million won and the DIRECTOR is left woth 12 MILLION won + your health/pension/TAX money because its a SCAM and your DIRECTOR actually DEDUCTS these from YOUR salary bu POCKETS it HIM/HERSELF.....
BIG SCAM....................
NOW take the PUBLIC SCHOOL with 2 bank accounts.....
the school pays the money into the 1st account...... the school Manager then deducts TAX money, and your Korean Associate Teachers Salary (1,2 million) and your salary is left which is then transferred into your sencond bank account)..............
THERE is NO SCAM in this........ IT has ALREADY been investigated by the PROPER authorities (NOT suome 3rd sumbag party like EFL-LAW) and was deemed NOTHING wrong with it.......
AT least you know how much money is being paid into and out to each person - not like a SMALL HAGWON (15 million won per month DIRECTOR) |

Really? It isn't illegal? Did the "recruiter" (sometimes refer to themself as a manager) place their stamp on this account? If you have to accounts in ONLY your name and choose to hand over all the access to someone, then yes I can see how that is not illegal. However if this is the case (both names on the account)I wish I could get a written letter from the police and government about this not being illegal, as my husband is not allowed to open an account in both of our names (told by the bank that it is illegal). It is also interesting that some of these recruiters/managers require you to sign a contract with them also. I'm not law major.....but...as far as I know...you can only have ONE legal contract. Also, do your contracts match? I saw two of these contracts and it was very interesting that the actual school would pay you for sick days, however the manager's contract would not..hmm...who keeps that money...? |
