Prosecutors allege doctors paid for advanced degrees
January 29, 2005 JEONJU, North Jeolla Prosecutors here said yesterday they have seized evidence that officials at several university medical schools received bribes from doctors in exchange for fraudulent master's and doctorate degrees.
"There are suspicions that some professors received 7 to 20 million won ($6,800 to $19,500) in bribes from doctors who were enrolled in master's and doctorate programs to have graduate students write their theses for them," according to a prosecutor.
Officials said some doctors are alleged to not have attended any classes.
Universities under investigation include Chonbuk National, Wonkwang, Woosuk and Seonam. All of the schools have medical, dental and oriental medicine schools.
Prosecutors are reviewing a list of doctors who received master's and doctorate degrees from the universities from 2000 until now.
Professors who conferred those degrees will also be investigated.
Medical experts in North Jeolla province said it's well-known that a master's degree costs about 7 million won and doctorate around 20 million won.
Prosecutors say they plan to summon university professors as early as next week. They will also look at financial records.
After the investigation began, professors at certain medical schools were found to have erased or replaced their computer hard discs.
Some professors were found to have returned the bribe money to doctors, prosecutors allege.
Doctors said granting medical degrees in exchange for money has been a long-established practice.
"Doctors who operate their own clinic do not have time to attend class or partake in classroom experiments so they habitually give money to the schools in order to gain degrees," one medical school professor said.
Doctors are said to pursue advanced degrees because it looks good on their credentials.
