Yeah, but that's only 99,000 Canadian won, right? |

| Two friends of mine live in a typical three-bedroom. The heat never comes on (they've started using space heaters), and they only use the gas for coffee and tea twice a day. They never cook anything. Their gas bill was W75,000, and hydro was W105,000. Go figure. |

Bloody 'ell. My apartment is 45 pyong, and my gas bill around 2,000 krw per month: to be fair, I rarely cook. Heating and other utes are around 150,000. I leave the heating on 24/24 set at 19, jacking it up a notch if I am there and get chilly. |

I'd say the gas meter is broken or being misread/misreported, the pipes are faulty, or someone is pilfering their gas somehow. Or they're just using more gas than they think. Nobody gets a 75,000 won gas bill without a bit of trying. But actually, that's considerably lower than what you'd expect to pay if you lived in a house as I do. Though in the case of houses (those on the doshi-gas grid, not those with their own oil boilers), the doshi-gas bill includes everything -- the heating, the hot water, and the gas ovens. So when the bills can reach as high as 200,000 won in winter months, there's a good reason and I'm not byatching.

Wangja, 2,000 won/mo. is insanely low, isn't it?! I find that harder to fathom than Atkinson's friends' bill. How is it that you rarely cook? Didn't I read somewhere that you were married? So, do you eat most meals on the road or something? |

Yes JG I am, but she's away right now, so I cook maybe once a week. Well, heat a tin! But when she's here we cook and it has never been more than 3,000. And no, I don't understand, but I don't feel inclined to query it too much.
Yep. lunch out every day, and perhaps a Paris baguette in the evening - or the Guinness stew at 3 Alleys .... life is beautfiul. |

| I mostly turn my heat for an hour in the morning. Get my toes warm. I live over a bakery so the heat filters up. |

You've mentioned Gunter's quite often on these boards, so I wonder we haven't crossed paths before. (And it's "3 Alley Pub", right? or did he change the name?) Up until last year I used to be a regular for Quiz Nite on Thursdays (our teams were "The Northern Alliance" & "Kentucky Fried Children"), but the last five times I've gone we were unable to squeeze in. It's a fair distance from home, and with the near certainty of not finding a seat, who needs it anymore... |

Yep, it is 3 Alley you are right. Thursday is so busy in there, the Quiz nite really is popular, common days for me are Saturday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. We probably have bumped into each other, even if only reading the new jokes! I am usually at one of the high tables, often dressed as my avatar.
(The bad news is on A/b's for 2 weeks and no beer till 8 Feb ... and there is only so much tonic water a man can drink)
Edit: I am pretty sure you can reserve a table ...... |

| Mine are so cheap, even when I crank up the heat; I can't believe some are so expensive. |

| I've gotten gas bills as high as 70,000 but only when roasting my apartment with the ondol for extended periods. It's worth it. |

In my first apartment in Seoul, my gas bill was 1,260 EVERY month. I just assumed that it wasn't metred, but a flat-rate fee. Both my roommate and I cooked dinner every night.
In my apartment now (an old villa) my bill ranges a bit, can be as low as 1,500, but this month is the higest it has ever been: 4,530
We cook dinner every night and on Satudays and Sundays we drink 7 or 8 cuppas each. Isn't it strange how the gas bill can vary SO widely from apartment to apartment???? |

Our gas bill is astronomical. Granted, I cook and I have the heating on a fair bit.. but it still seems really high for the amount we use.
BTW, I LOVE the 3 Alley Pub! Haven't been there for a while. Their quiz night is always wild. Will have to go visit some time soon! |

Quiz nite is Thursday - but it gets crowded early.
From Iteawon station / Hamilton Hotel turn right at the Baskin' Bobbins corner towards the Moghul restaurant, then left and it is about 50 metres on your right ... at the junction of 3 Alleys .... (well, 4 actually ) |
