I sometimes order region 1 DVDs for films that aren't released in Korea (or, in the case of 'Ran,' for films that are released in Korea and stripped of their English subtitles).
Amazon has a warning now that some DVDs contain a "Regional Coding Enhancement," and that some international customers have complained that certain DVDs won't play on their region-free machines.
Anyone have more info about this? I currently watch region 1 films on my PS2, with the help of a region-free "booting" disc; but I'm worried that I won't be able to watch some of them when I purchase a new DVD player later this year.

Right, the newer DVDs are set not to play on region-free or "chipped" DVD players. Here are the two approaches I've taken, one is a workaround, the other a proper solution.
1. Trick the machine/disk
This is like your booting disk for the PS2. Get an older Region-1 DVD (pre-RCE) that will and play on your chipped or region-free machine, and run it till you reach the FBI warning. Press pause, then open (eject), remove the disk and pop in the newer DVD (with RCE). Press play or "DVD Menu". It's never failed me, and I've done this with three different DVD players, one Region-3 chipped machine and two region-free machines.
2. Buy a Region-1 player
I know this simple, straightforward and legal solution will not appeal much to people who'd rather fiddle around with tricky ways to beat the system. But really, with prices for DVD players as low as they are, why not just treat yourself to a Region-1 player? Departing GIs and DoD people are always unloading them, so you can pick one up for next to nothing, I should think. And they'll be free-voltage, 110/220V. I spend more on transportation each month than the cost of a GOOD used Region-1 DVD player. |
