| I just ordered a Lomographic camera kit valued at $US275 from overseas, and then after the process it informed me I might have to pay duties on it...what's the deal for Korea? My friend will receive it, and not me. Any ideas people?? Little bitpissed to find there may be more of a charge...d'oh... |

Sorry to say, but you could be charged as much as 20 to 70% of the cost of the product.

My wedding dressed was shipped from NYC. My husband paid 30% import tax....
They tax you on anything over 75US$, that includes postage. |

Electronic Appliance 20-29%
Camera, VCR Camera 20-60%
Foods(If excessive) 50%
Piano 20-42%
Carpets 36%
Crystal Ware 35%
High-value-Furniture 35%
Golf sets 20-38%
Ski sets 20-50%

Basically, this is because Koreans jack the price all up on certain items.
Case-in-point, I can purchase a Samsung dual DVD/VCR for about $100 in the USA. The same thing here is twice the cost.
And it's made here.
Now you know why some people value friendships with US military people so highly. They can order from on-base and get a major discount, sometimes saving hundreds of dollars.
Ever see the AFKN commercial against "black-marketing?"
Now you understand half of what they're talking about. The other half is sending home conterfeit goods purchased cheap her and trying to sell them for a profit back home. |

I hear some people here talk about bringing over parts of their computer. Any taxes on them?
I was thinking of picking up some new computer parts and getting a new camcorder back home while making a visit? Will they slap a tax on me, or are there ways of getting around it by bringing them stripped from thier packages and without thier manuals? Thanks. |

Probably not... depends on if you get stopped and searched at the airport, but it's not likely. I was soooo paranoid of that when I moved my Paradigm stereo equipment here. I wrote all over the boxes, "USED" in English and Korean. So paranoid, in fact, that I snapped at the lady when she questioned why I had so many big boxes, and what was in them. I said, "STEREO EQUIPMENT-- It's used, and it's mine!"
She let me go through and didn't dig through the boxes. |
