|
|
Does anyone know how or where one can watch the Super Bowl? Are there any places to watch in Seoul (or Gangwon-do)? Is it being shown on regular TV?
The game will start at 8:30 am, Monday morning, February 7th.
Has anyone watched it in previous years? Any recommendations?
Thanks |

Yes, the Super Bowl will be shown next Monday morning. The game will be televised on AFN. I'm not sure about the Korean stations...although I did see the Raiders and Bucs Super Bowl on one of the Korean sports channels. One of my friends didn't get AFN, but was a real football junkie, and stayed at a yeogwan in Itaewon so that he could watch the game. That might be an option(albeit a bit pricey). Good luck. |

I watched the Super Bowl live last year on one of the Korean sports channels. It was either MBC-ESPN or KBS Sky Sports. I can't remember which. |

Last year it was on three different stations on my TV. I have to work this year. Well, I have to go in anyway... |

"Why watch...?" |

But you're going to watch all the FA cup quarter-finals, right? |

James, you have no idea how much of a religion football (American style) can be to some people.
I think it's a rather boring game, but might flip to the game every now and again to check up on the Patriots and how they are doing.
Speaking of which, Thorin, why the old school avatar?
Anyways I'm sure it'll be on AFN. My first year here, it was playing while I was in Osaka on a visa run, and I wound up winning a lot of yen for placing my bet that the Pats would win the Super Bowl that year. I was happy until I realized I was stuck with all those coins. |

Yeah. Its fun to watch for the commercials but AFN won't carry those. From a sociological POV the half time show is critical. It's the ultimate distillation of American "culture" that year. It's 15 minutes of the least offensive pop music/performance white Americans have glommed onto the previous year.
The best part is where the winning team is interviewed and players all thank Jesus for helping them win. A mysterious comment because A) what does god care about football? Why does he favor one team over another? B) How come they thank god for the super bowl win but they never thank God for the three $1,000 a night hookers some advertiser paid for they had the night before or the lines of blow they snorted from between their fun bags? Just once I'd like some celebrity thanking god for their Oscar/Super Bowl ring/Nobel Prize for Literature to also thank god for the free drugs and sex . But they never do. Pisses me right off.
Barring all that, it's an excuse to hang out with friends and drink and eat. |

I really don't think that your average Korean employer will understand the need to miss a day of work to watch a football game. Now if you were in Europe and that country's team was playing in the world's cup, your boss would cancel classes (with pay) and take you down to bar to watch it. This actually happened. |

I enjoy playing sports. I even enjoy sitting in the odd stadium and rah rahing a team and eating stadium food. I just don't have much time in my day to sit and watch/follow televised pro sports. |
