When I first came to Korea I did not get sick. I figured it was because I had traveled a fair bit, though not in the East, and was used to the changes by now. But when I moved off the mainland in November I did get sick, and, to some degree or another, have been ill ever since. I dont know if its stress, allergies, or what. For the third time since November Ive lost my sense of smell. My skin has rejected me- I didnt have problems like this in high school. And Ive spent half my time here on antibiotics, which I think is half the problem. Everyone Ive met seems to have similar stories of their first month, three months, six months, here so, I assume this is normal. I would appreciate any advice on making this adjustment less painful. As is, I am seriously thinking a month of detox: all veggies, lots and lots of water and no going out. The cure, it seems, is almost as deadly as the disease.

off the mainland? which island are you on?

i was in korea two years and never got sick, never once went to the doctor for antibiotics, never got food poisoning. aside from the usual colds in the winter, i felt pretty good. this is despite smoking a pack a day and heavy drinking 4 nights a week.

i ate everything the koreans eat and pretty much adjusted to their diet.

i would get off the antibiotics and let your immune system get stronger. what's your diet like? fast food all the time? raymon 5 nights a week? diet is very important. stress could also play into it.

good luck.

I'm on Jeju and it may be an allergy to the tangerine trees that is making me susceptible to other things. My diet is better here than back in the States, I get far more exercise and I cant remember the last time I had ramyan. Yet, so far its been sinusitis, tonsillitis, and the flu with a few colds in-between. I have gotten better now that Ive been off the antibiotics for a while. Guess it's just going to have to be clean living for a while. <sob>

Suck it up, stay off meds, and eat whatever is served. Might suck for a while but you'll be just fine.

Kids these days...
