| The construction quality of small one room villas may be crap because they are built by small time companies. However, high rise construction is a whole different matter. Did you know that one of the Petronas towers was built by Samsung? No one is complaining about the construction of that. Infact, Samsung Group will also be building the 700+ meter tower in Dubai. I wouldnt worry about the quality of the Jamsil tower if it gets approved and built. |

Well said. But they do have a good track record of building great tall buildings outside of Korea.
The skyscraper page has to be one of the coolest pages on the internet. |

Those accidents were 10 years ago. A lot of things have changed since then. The Daegu thing wasnt because of construction, what does that have to do with anything? I could bring up 9-11 as an example of poor american construction standards. That would be just as stupid. |

Good point. But one of my students was saying that although they are praised for their large projects in foreign countries, they never seem to follow the same quality standards when building in Korea. It's the same everywhere. Construction companies will cut corners if they can get away with it. |

How much have things really changed?
I remember walking around the unfinished tunnels of the Busan subway line extension as it was under construction (neither fence nor security was present to keep me and my friends out). Never mind the fact that the subway line was pretty much deserted for the first several months of its life as people kept away in their wait for its collapse. Never mind the reports on Korean news back when the line out to Haeundae was still newish and the stories of its problems.
Safety and security still is of little concern in the construction industry of Korea.
As for the Daegu subway fire tragedy, true the fire was the result of a sick and deranged homicidal Korean but the fact that it spread so far and so fast was a direct result of the low quality and highly flamable material used in the construction of the subway (that and the lack of emergency lights and other safety equipment. never mind the fact that the quick release levers for the subway doors were kept safe and out of sight). Though the fire could not have been prevented the high number of dead and injured was a direct result of kick-backs, bribery and the low standards associated with the Korean construction industry. |

That's very interesting. I guess most of us take the 1999 Seoul edition of the lonely planet as bible and don't realize a couple taller buildings have been built since then  |
