Elders Chastise Themselves for Failings of the Young
National Academy of Sciences chief Kim Tae-kil and Dongduk Women's University president Son Bong-ho, the association's co-chairs, knelt on a mat dressed in white mourning clothes. "As a moral philosopher, I have taught students the duty of human beings. But Korea's moral index is ranked the lowest in the world. I am truly sorry," Kim said. Son added, "I have enjoyed my privileges rather than taking care of other people. I ask for your forgiveness." Seventeen social leaders including Seoul National University honorary professor Kim Kyung-dong and Korea University honorary professor Kim Yong-jun rolled up their trouser legs and whipped their legs three times. But former education ministers Lee Myoung-hyun and Park Young-shik whipped their legs five times, saying their fault was greater than that of others.
Seoul National University's Prof. Hwang Kyung-shik said, "Sticks rather than carrots are needed. More importantly, teachers who have failed to lead students appropriately must punish themselves." Lawyer Kang Ji-won, the organizer of the event, said the group staged the self-mortification event because members realized they have failed to set an example as responsible elders and must be held responsible for Korea's current moral malaise.

Do you agree with these quotations from the above article?
1. Korea's moral index is ranked the lowest in the world.
2. Teachers who have failed to lead students appropriately must punish themselves. |

Where do they stand on the issue of the increasing trend of Korean women marrying foreign men? |

Reality, where the hell have you been, and welcome back.
Oh yeah, the questions...
1. Couldn't say if it's the lowest in the world. I haven't been to enough places to compare. But Koreans themselves -- increasingly better-travelled than I am -- generally view this place as a dump, morally speaking. So, perhaps.
2. The university presidents whipping themselves? I'm not sure quite how effective a lesson that's going to be, but hell, for freak value alone, I'm pleased. |

Thank you, RR, for finally confirming my belief that I am, in fact, living on another planet, and have been for quite some time.

In the last election, the GNP ran an ad which was meant to show that it was sorry for its past mistakes. Apparently, it featured a young man(the GNP) being whipped by an elderly woman(conservative voters). |

Hey, RR, glad you're back. Were you on vacation or out foraging for, stockpiling, statistics? Maybe hibernating? |

My initial thoughts to the questions:
1. If anything affects Korea's moral index it's its obsession of appearances over reality.
2. See #1.
Oh, and glad to see you back, Reality. |
