Hello;

I ran a search on this, came up with a thread from last year, and am hoping for more recent information. I've got a prescription for Janssen-Ortho's Tri-Cyclen. Is this, or a similar brand, available in Korea?

If anyone knows if it's available in Daejeon, I'll be doubly grateful.

Thanks!

Tri-Cyclen is not available in Korea. We had to stock up in Guam. Might want to bring a few months worth with you to tide you over until you can get back into civilization.

Strange, the old thread I found had something different. Thanks.

Have you called someone? Call this number....02-392-3404....that is the international clinic at Yonsei University. You can ask if Dr. Linton is there...or just ask one of his nurses. Just explain that you are wondering if your birth control pills are available before you make an appointment to come see the doctor. They should be able to help you..Very Happy

HI Natasha,

The above suggestion is a good one, but I know that you are still in Canada, and are probably trying to figure out if you have to stock up before you come. The thing is, birth control is incredibly cheap here, that unless you are on an insurance plan back home, you may want to investigate switching. The average pack of pills is 6000-9000 won, and are available in most pharmacies.

I use a triphasic pill called "triquilar" which is more expensive (12,000) and not so easy to find in smaller pharmacies, but works really well for me. Here's a link to the info:

http://www.4cnrs-birthcontrol.com/triquilar-information.html

Some other brands (coc's) are:

Myvlar/ (Ethinyl estradiol 0.03mg
Gestodene 0.075mg)

Mercilon (Desogestrel 0.15mg
Ethinyl estradiol 0.02mg)

minivlar (Ethinyl estradiol 0.03mg
Levonorgestrel 0.15mg)

sexcon (Ethinyl estradiol 0.03mg
Norgestrel 0.3mg
(LNG 0.15mg)

and Diane35 ( don't know active ingredients - sorry)

Most of these are made by the German company called Schering. It may be a good idea to visit your doctor at home, and ask if any of these would be worth switching to.

Good luck!

I also used Triquilar before I stopped to try for my baby. It has exactly the same composition as the one I used before I came here, so it worked the same.

The pharmacy opposite Time World (the really big one in the corner) will sell it. Actually, the pharmacy IN Time World sells it too. I used to be able to get it from there.

I don't know if this qualifies as a "smartarsed, unhelpful remark", but I wonder if anyone is aware that in some countries birth control pills are now recognized as a form of pollution?

So many women in the US and Canada are now using prescription birth control pills that scientists have been able to measure an environmental impact from their use. The excess estrogen and estrogen-related compounds from women who use them are excreted in the urine, and scientists have estimated that several tanker trucks worth of pure human estrogen and estrogen-related compounds are released into the Great Lakes every year. This has been associated with disruptions in the hormone processes of fish:

Quote:
Feminized male fish were first found downstream from sewage plants in the United Kingdom, said researchers at the Geological Society of America's (GSA) annual meeting in Boston.

"Closer to home, we have observed intersex white perch in various locations in the Great Lakes, " explained Chris Metcalfe, professor of Environmental and Resource Studies at Trent University in Ontario. "And in the Columbia River, there is a much higher proportion of female salmon than males, indicating that some feminization process may be going on."

Metcalfe conducted lab experiments on aquarium fish to try to find out which of the various forms of estrogen are the culprits in the sexual alteration of fish. He reported his research findings and shared new statistics on estrogen concentrations in water, generated by the Canadian Department of Environment in Burlington, Ontario, at the GSA meeting on Monday.

Metcalfe found that very low levels of several estrogen hormones - 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol, 17 beta-estradiol, estrone and estriol - caused intersex and altered sex ratios in the aquarium fish.

"Ethinylestradiol is the active ingredient in the birth control pill," said Metcalfe. "The other compounds are the natural female estrogen (beta estradiol) and metabolites of that compound excreted by women."

The issue has been raised about overuse of birth control pills for two related reasons: 1) there are other forms of contraception available, and 2) some women who take estrogen supplements/birth control pills do so to prevent osteoporosis, which is preventable through changes in diet and exercise.

On a related issue, the use of estrogen supplements ("premarin") by older women has raised some concerns about the mistreatment of the horses used to produce the product. Premarin® is a conjugated estrogen product extracted from pregnant mares' urine (PMU). There are an estimated 500 PMU farms in North America, with the vast majority located in the prairie provinces of western Canada. Mares enter the collection barns in September and remain until March or April. Each mare is kept tethered in a narrow stall with a rubber cup positioned over her vulva to collect the urine flow. The cup is held in place by overhead supports and a partial body harness. The tether and collection apparatus greatly restrict movement, and the mare is unable to turn around or take more than a step or two in any direction. If the tether is too short, she may even be unable to lie down comfortably.

PMU mares may be used for several consecutive years—provided, of course, that they become pregnant again during the brief summer breeding season. But because there is a serious overpopulation of horses throughout North America, and PMU mares are often untrained and difficult to handle, there is little demand for them once they have outlived their usefulness as estrogen producers. Typically, barren or unproductive mares are sent to the slaughterhouse.

Foals are allowed to nurse and be with their mothers for only three to four months—instead of the normal six-month period. When the time comes for the mares to return to the collection barns, the farmers dispose of surplus foals. A few female foals may be kept for future PMU production, and some farmers even breed registered horses in hopes of selling the foals as riding prospects. Thousands of remaining foals are sent to unsheltered feedlots until they reach a desirable market weight. There they are slaughtered and their carcasses shipped to Europe and Asia for human consumption.

Know this is late, but some might find it handy: Tri-Cyclen is not available in Korea, according to Ortho. There is another Tri-something, I think, and I'll look around for that.

Yes, Triquilar. That is available in Korea.

The hormones composition of this is:

The memo-pack holds 6 light-brown tablets containing 0.05mg levonorgestrel and 0.03mg ethinylestradiol, 5 white tablets containing 0.075mg levonorgestrel and 0.04mg ethinylestradiol, 10 ochre tablets containing 0.125mg levonorgestrel and 0.03mg ethinylestradiol and 7 larger white placebo tablets, diameter 6.8mm. All tablets have a lustrous sugar coating.

You should check it out with your doc to see if it is ok for you to take.

My wife uses mercilon, and has had no problems at all. I'm pretty happy because it comes to 5000w per month.
