|
|
i posted about a week ago that i was stuck in fukuoka. i'm still here. and thanks to tomorrow's holiday, it looks as though i might be stuck here for another week. with every day that passes, i'm losing a little bit more of my mind. i'm starting to get panicky now too. even sleeping in the internet cafe, i can barely make it another week and afford to get my visa sorted out and then get back to korea. immigration has already given my hopefully soon-to-be boss an unofficial assurance that my visa application would be accepted this time round, but what the hell am i going to do if they suddenly change their minds? i was only expecting to be here for a few days, so i didn't bring much in the way of clothes, and certainly didn't bring anything worthy of going to a job interview in, in the event that i'm stuck here in japan. i'm on def-con 5, which is essentially just sitting here b--ching.
that said, fukuoka is a beautiful place, and i'd like to come back here with money sometime... maybe my next big holiday. in fact, my time here, while mostly miserable due to unfortunate circumstances, has made me think that i should start seriously considering teaching over here after i do another year or two in korea.
but back to the panic...
please someone... offer me words of encouragement. thanks.
p.s. anyone coming to fukuoka on the boat for a visa run... if you've never been here before and are a little anxious, post a message on here letting me know when your boat arrives, and i'll gladly show you where the consulate is. |

HHWIGHTTING!!!!
DAEHANMIN-GUK!!
how's that for encouragement?
some advice too...go down to the ferry docks and panhandle. maybe you can make enough for a capsule hotel, or a good meal. and simultaneously, you can lower the reputation of foreign teachers in japan.

Make the best of your time and look for teaching jobs in Fukuoka! You wouldn't regret that!
Have someone who trusts you send some money through Western Union to buy a shirt for interviews. |

I am sure you could get a job with NOVA very quickly. Granted it would be like working for a Wonderland here in Korea but beggars can't be choosers can they? BTW, I thought Fukuoka was a very nice city. I wish I had had more time to see it though. |

You can do it, bro. Wish I could head down there for a few beers, but getting there ain't cheap, and I've got to divvy out this month's funds carefully after the nightmare vacation expenses I chalked up. |

I advise you to find a karaoke room and sing away your troubles like Bill Murray doing a rendition of Roxy Music. |

day 19. the last of my sanity dwindled away ages ago. i've finally found something as cheap as wendy's cheeseburgers, so my diet has increased in variety by 100%.
i've all but entirely drained my savings from my last teaching job, and now i'm just trying to hold onto enough to get my visa and get the hell out of here.
i've come to find that teaching jobs in fukuoka are hard to come by. i would imagine it would be all the harder for me as i've been wearing the same clothes for over a week.
but there is finally a light at the end of this tunnel. i got word from my boss today that the visa papers are ready to be picked up. dhl will take two days to get them here. maybe he will send them later today. maybe tomorrow morning. either way, i expect they will arrive on thursday, along with some money.
oh how i long for the high life i used to lead in korea. so long ago are the days when i slept in a 'bed' and 'laundered' my clothes.
friday will make three weeks exactly. i wonder if this is the longest visa run on record.
fukuoka is a beautiful city, but it's not a good one to be poor in.
one more round of encouragement should get me through to the end. thanks all, and i'll see some of you soon. |

Hope you get the papers soon!
In the meantime, some options to get cheap food in Japan: lunch boxes in convenience stores, the triangle kimbab (you can heat the lunchboxes/kimbab in the microwave in the store). I'm sure there is a Yoshinoya restaurant nearby, it's a chain that serves only donburi (rice topped with meat/veggies), but pretty cheap (300-500 yen) and open 24/24...
Good luck! |

there's at least one thread up about it. do a search for 'fukuoka' and my handle, and you should find it. |

It would suprise mee if DHL to FUK takes more than a day. I have packages going to desert holes like Khartoum that make it within 48 hrs, and that's via 2 hubs. |
