Find out here how a long underwater tunnel is presently being constructed to join Busan with Geoje Island 8 km to the south.
It's a huge financial undertaking which may make some wonder why.
I think it's obvious: It's because study after study has shown that the best place to join Japan to the mainland (a Japanese obsession) by way of underwater tunnel is at the southeasternmost point of the Korean peninsula, at Geoje Island (old spelling: Koje).
However, the public in democratic Korea aren't ready to support such a link with their old foe. So, the project is happening in stages, and the Korean public is presented with the Busan-Geoje link as if it were a stand alone project, which it is not, nor makes sense to be. Geoje is an island of shipbuilding, with beautiful beaches already accessible by bridge on the west coast at Tongyeong, admittedly three hours from Busan by present routes. The underdeveloped tourism industry on Korea's second largest island could never repay the expensive link being built to it from Busan. Then again, this is Korea: large scale public works projects built on wishful thinking is par for the course. |

Speaking of old foes and tunnels, there are a lot linking NK to SK. Maybe one day they'll be made "official." |

As part of that linking, You do know there will be a train linking South Korea to Europe, don't you? The story was covered in the Korea Herald. It'll greatly reduce the cost of transporting goods, especially automobiles and mobile phones. |

I think there is some long term plan to create a trans-asian highway... from Japan, through the Koreas, through Russian, and to the doorway of Europe. I wish 'em luck. |
