I will be moving soon, and I have this big, old computer monitor that I got free from the PC room that weighs about a ton that I don't really want to move to my next destination. So, I want to buy a new monitor. I want something light and flat, but not too expensive. Any recommendations? |

I bought an ex display 19 inch model from Yongsan. It was quite cheap at 600.000 won. The Samsung models new were 1.2 million won when I bought this CEDIS 190A model for half the price. It's a nice monitor and possibly even cheaper now, look around and bargain hard. |

Thanks Keith, that seems like a reasonable price for that model. |

Do some research before you jump on the cheap LCD wagon. Response times and contrast ratios often are severely compromised on cheaper models, along with other defects and anomalies.
With Samsung however, you are getting one of the best LCD displays in the world. Good response times and very nice contrast ratios set it apart from anything else, thus the price difference. |

Hey Demophobe,
Are there any particular models that you would recommend? I don't know much about monitors. And, approximately how much are those models? |

Go to Youngsan and look around.
Keep in mind that LCD monitors have a "native resolution" they look good at. 15" monitors are usually 1024x768 and 17" or 19" monitors are 1280x1024, if memory serves.
At other resolutions other than their native, they usually look quite bad, in my opinion. |

Yes, this is very true and a good point, especially and mainly if you are a gamer. Most reasonable graphic cards will give the 1280x1024 resolution for the desktop and videos, but gaming at that resolution across the board (for all games) may require some horsepower.
So, for most applications, even a mediocre graphics card will suffice, but if you want to game and have the picture look good, then, yes, as Derrek said, you will need to play at the native resolution for the monitor.
As for actual model names, well, I'm not sure, as I am a die-hard CRT user. Color spectrum and "true-ness", size for the money, 'refresh' rate (response time in LCD-speak) and price are still unsurpassed by LCDs.
Have a look at the 172X...not bad. 500:1 contrast and 12ms response time. Other than that, just read some reviews I guess. |

Not exactly true.
For color, mid-level LCD's are not good for high-level design work, but neither are mid-level CRT's. At the high end you'd have to be a freak or a pedant to see any color difference, and for average use - including games - the colors are great on a good LCD.
Refresh rate and response time are actually 2 different things. Refresh rates only apply to CRTs, what some people call "screen flicker." This is why you can feel drained or have a headache or ruin your eyes with a CRT. LCD's are a LOT easier on the eyes.
Response time refers only to LCD's, and a higher response time is what makes "ghosting." Anything below 12 and the difference between that and a CRT is questionable.
These new LCD's are great and the price is going down every day. I don't know if you have them in Korea, but check out BenQ - nice stuff and quite cheap. |

DVI = Digital Video Input.
I love it... really great quality. Your video card must have the digital video output, though. Oh, and I noticed that sometimes a bad or poor-quality cord can cause little red noise on my screen in certain colors like deep/bright green.
Looks like this:

Thank you everybody for the help and advice. I don't live in Seoul, but I will probably make a trip to Yongsan to buy my new monitor. Bottom line here, approximately how much should I expect to spend on this thing? |

I guess I'm a pedantic freak. Colors on an LCD are just to contrasted for me, as if the delineations are just too clear. Not that I can actually see the mips, but I can tell very easily even from a screenshot which monitor is which. Yes, on a "good" LCD, the colors are better, but not as good as a "good" CRT. Apples to apples, CRTs produce a more realistic image, in my opinion.

Yes, you are right, but surely you can see the parallel I was drawing here; how refresh rate = response time in the 2 worlds. I have a 1600x1200 resolution @ 85Hz, or the screen is re-drawing 85 times per second. No flicker, nor eyestrain at these rates at all. For me, the high contrast on an LCD actually hurts my eyes, as if it's just too sharp an image.
LCDs and gaming just don't cut it yet, bottom line. They are getting better all the time, but no there yet in terms of aliasing (real bad at that), multi-resolutions (native resolution derivations usually equal a really bad image), greyscale reproduction, durability (they scratch just way too easily) and of corse, ghosting on mid-level machines.
I do confess, that I really don't go for mid-level stuff on a computer. I have a 21" 2100DF Samsung, and it has spoiled me. I use a BNC connector and get a nice clean signal, noticably different from D-SUB, and love the high-res, high refresh rates I get from it.
This is like Pepsi/Coke, McD's/BK, Apple/PC.....never ending, eh? |
