I switched my KT cellphone usage plan last month, and there was some confusion over what was left owing on the old vs the new one. The billing only reflected the new one, and showed a zero balance on the old plan. I thought that everything was straight, until I get a phone call last week from their collections dept, saying that I am one month in arrears. So, I get them to fax me this billing record of what I owe and say, ok, I'll pay on Monday, when I was planning to go to the bank to do some other stuff. They said ok and give me a Nonhyeop bank account number to send it to. Next day. A phone call from the same dept, but from a different guy. Telling me the same stuff, and giving me the hackjob collection routine. I told them that I've already spoken to someone there about this, and I'm taking care of it on Monday. Oh, ok. Friday. Another phone call from the same dept. Different person. Same conversation. Oh, ok. She repeats the earlier bank account number.

There wasn't any language issues here, as I made sure that my Korean friend re-confirmed my instructions with the first guy on the phone.

Monday comes, and as soon as I get into my office in the morning, my cellphone rings and it's the last chick who called me on Friday. She's doing the bulldog routine, and tells me to get to the bank ASAP. I read her back the account number that she provided on Friday, which she corrects me and gives me a different one. Oh, ok. Off I go.

No less than 10 minutes after I come back from the bank with receipt in hand detailing the transfer, she calls me up yelling, and saying that they never received the funds, hangs up, and cuts my cellphone.

Now, I'm getting really pissed. My finance manager was nearby and she's a bulldog in her own right, so she gets on the phone, and tears a strip out of the chick. The money was sitting in another KT collections account, but they were all befuddled over doing debit/credit to their internal accounts, so my manager had to spell out the solution for them. They apologized for their screw-up and assured me that my cellphone will be restored right away. Well, it's not. We continued to call them back, until closing time, but the line was always busy.

I'll be out of the country for the New Year, so I can wait until next Monday to deal with this. But I just had to gripe about how the service depts in telecom suck anywhere. I had similar gong shows with Telus, back home.

Anyways, Mith, this is why I didn't respond to your text, today. Confused

Try dealing with Korean credit card companies. What a bunch of freaking idiots. We have overseas charges at least twice a week and EVERY week they make the SAME mistake.

They are only open M-F 8-5 too. My wife was dumbfounded when I called my bank at five in the morning (their time).

The Korea Exchange Bank just decided to shut downtheir computer network during the holidays. Nothing works...mt ATM card, my debit/cash card...nothing.

I was lucky that I happend to have a fair bit of cash on hand for something else. Nice of them to not give any notice, eh?

Good luck with your phone.

No surprise. I think even Incheon international airport is closed at night.

I switched my cellphone service from KT to LG. KT's signal is too weak. Either I couldn't hear anything, or I'd get cut off.

I might be wrong, but it could be because there's a huge virus making the rounds, and most of their workers are off on holidays.

On topic: Last month I received a letter in the mail from KT, too. Apparently, I left SK 3 years ago with 50,000 won still outstanding on my cellphone bill. BS, I say, but, hell, what can I do? I threw out the bills which may have proved I owe them nothing a long time ago.

Maybe there's some big KT conspiracy to juice money out of foreigners.

It could be that...Or, and I tend to think this is more likely, it's personal.

Very Happy

I seem to remember someone posting around Chuseok time that their bank was shutting down over the holidays and s/he wouldn't be able to withdraw their money.
